Denmark and Greenland have strongly pushed back against the renewed remarks of the US President Donald Trump. However, the US pressident suggests that the US should take control of Greenland, which has escalated diplomatic tensions between long-standing NATO allies. Moreover, the controversy has resurfaced after the US President repeated his interest in the strategically Arctic territory due to defence and national security concerns.
What does Trump say?

The US President commented in an interview with The Atlantic magazine, where he stated, “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defence.”
Surprisingly, his remark comes just a day after the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and later the US president claimed Washington would run the nation. Now, this development has alarmed the officials in the country.

Denmark Rejects Annexation Claims

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded sharply. He warned the US president to stop making threats against Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory in the Danish kingdom.
Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday, “It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the US needing to take over the nation. The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom”.
Furthermore, she urged Washington to respect international law and long-standing alliances. She also added that the country and its people have made it clear they are not for sale. Still, the nation fears that aggressive rhetoric could highlight the regional stability, especially after recent US military actions abroad.

Greenland’s Leaders Call Remarks “Disrespectful”

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also condemned the US president’s statements. He said, “That’s enough now. No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation. He also added that the country is open to talk, but only through proper diplomatic channels and with full respect for international law.
He also criticised attempts to connect the nation to Venezuela or military intervention scenarios by calling such comparisons wrong and disrespectful. Danish officials noted that a defence agreement already grants the US access to the country, making annexation unnecessary.

US Actions Fuel Diplomatic Strain
Tensions have also intensified after the Trump administration appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland in December. However, Jeff had already publicly supported annexation, which drew criticism from Copenhagen and Nuuk. Danish officials noted that a defence agreement already grants the US access to the nation, making annexation unnecessary.
The situation also worsened when Katie Miller, wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, posted an image of Greenland coloured like the US flag with the word “SOON” on social media. The prime minister of the nation has called the post “Disrespectful”, and Denmark’s ambassador to the US has also issued a friendly reminder that the two countries are allies who expect respect for territorial integrity.
Historical Context of US Interest
According to Reuters, American interest in Greenland is not new. The US Secretary of State William H. Seward explored the idea of purchasing it from Denmark as early as 1865, shortly after acquiring Alaska. However, the topic resurfaced during World War II when the US occupied the nation for security reasons after Nazi Germany took control of it. That arrangement ended in 1949 when the nation joined NATO.
Clear Opposition From Greenlanders
All 5 political parties in the parliament of the nation have stated they do not want the territory to become part of the United States. According to the BBC, many Greenlanders favour eventual independence from the nation. However, opinion polls consistently show strong opposition to US annexation.
Denmark and Greenland continue to stress dialogue, alliance cooperation, and respect for sovereignty because geopolitical competition in the Arctic intensifies. However, sending a simple message that Greenland’s future will be decided by its people, not foreign pressure, is a sovereignty.
