Cardinal Robert Prevost Selected as First American Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV
Vatican City – May 8, 2025
In a historic first for the Roman Catholic Church’s 2,000-year history, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.
The announcement came after white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 6:07 p.m. local time, signaling the successful conclusion of the conclave. Cardinal Dominique Mamberti delivered the traditional “Habemus Papam” to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, introducing the new pope to the world.
A Life of Service Across Continents
Robert Prevost was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago. He became a member of the Order of St. Augustine in 1977. Holding degrees in mathematics and canon law, he was ordained a priest in 1982.
Prevost spent many years in Peru as a missionary, where he served as a parish priest, seminary educator, and diocesan official. In 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and later acquired Peruvian citizenship.
In 2023, Pope Francis named him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, entrusting him with the global responsibility of overseeing episcopal appointments. His extensive experience in Latin America and within the Vatican, coupled with a reputation for humility and administrative capability, helped pave his path to the papacy.
A Vision for Unity and Compassion
In his first public address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with the words “Peace be with you,” emphasizing themes of unity, dialogue, and charity.
He invoked the intercession of the Madonna of Pompeii, expressing a desire for the Church to be a source of comfort and support to all who suffer.
Observers anticipate that Pope Leo XIV will continue the inclusive and reform-minded mission of his predecessor, with a strong emphasis on social justice and outreach to marginalized communities.
A Historic Milestone
The election of an American to the papacy is a landmark event in the Catholic Church, symbolizing the increasingly global and diverse nature of its leadership. The multinational character of the Church continues to evolve, affirming its broad reach across cultures, continents, and communities.
