Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Facelift: Dubai Launches Dh650 Million Redevelopment Project

Dubai’s iconic location, “Ras Al Khor,” will undergo a transformative facelift soon. In addition, it is a popular wetland known for its vibrant ecosystem and migratory bird population. Moreover, the first phase of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Facelift is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Facelift

The Dubai Municipality has given a contract for the first phase of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary development project at a cost of around Dh100 million. However, the overall cost of this project is going to be estimated at Dh650 million. 

The project of redevelopment is focused on boosting biodiversity and saving the sustainability of the natural habitat. It also aims at strengthening the sanctuary’s position as the premier sustainable eco-tourism location. 

Moreover, the project aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The development also matches with its goal of keeping Dubai among the top 3 destination of tourist destinations in the world. 

Modify Mangrove Habitats – Phase One Highlights

Around 6.4 square km of the park will be covered in Phase 1 of this development project. This development is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The Dubai Municipality plans to improve and increase the mangrove areas by planting more trees and boosting its coverage to 60 percent from 45-60 percent.   

The work will also include developing new irrigation channels and restoring the existing mangrove forest. Moreover, it will also aim to create new water features, like mangrove lake, North Edge Lake, and reed ponds. In addition, a “Green Spine” is also going to be developed soon, which will be monitored regularly after its improvement. 

Water bodies in the region will improve by 144% which will cover 66 hectares. It will help the environment to boost carbon dioxide absorption by 60%. Moreover, the authority is also planning to add 10 hectares of mudflats to support the local wildlife and biodiversity. 

Infrastructure Development – Phase Two

The second phase of the development will be implemented at a later stage.  Moreover, it will focus on developing and boosting the main infrastructure and recreational areas. It will host many events and activities under a total area of 20,000 sq. metres. 

This phase will include a specifically designed visitor centre that will highlight the diverse plants and animals of the sanctuary.  Moreover,  you will find new birdwatching towers and many facilities, like restaurants, kiosks, and spaces for environmental education and awareness.

Cycling Tracks and Walking Trails

As a part of the second phase, it will add 5.6 kilometres of new cycle track. Moreover, the 3 kilometers of walking trails will also be included in the second phase of development. In addition, you will also see the 23 hectares of landscaped green space that will increase the overall visitor experience.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said, “The Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Facelift is one of the most prominent environmental initiatives by the Dubai Municipality. It will boost Dubai’s nature reserve as a popular eco-tourism spot and support Dubai’s goal of being the best place to live, work, and visit. 

He also said that it is a major milestone in the development and preservation of the environmental reserve. It shows the Dubai Municipality’s commitment to save biodiversity and natural habitats through innovative ways that support defendable growth and nature balance. This project is a portion of their wider effort to convert Dubai into a leading, sustainable, and high-quality city through it.
