Heavy Rainfall, Hail Hit Dubai and Al Ain—UAE Weather Update from NCM

Residents in Dubai and Al Ain witnessed a surprise spell of rainfall and hail on Friday afternoon, i.e, 18 July 2025, as dark clouds covered the city. However, it brings a temporary relief from the regular summer heat and the UAE weather in the region.

According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), heavy rainfall and hail were recorded over the area of Al Alisaili–Margham area in Dubai. Similarly, a light shower was also observed in Ghshabah, Al Ain.

This dramatic weather change was also recorded and shared on social media by the famous weather-tracking account @storm_ae. In addition, it posted distinctive visuals of storm clouds sweeping across the skyline in Dubai.

UAE Weather Expert Insight: Unseasonal Rains in UAE’s Summer

Although such a weather pattern is rare in summer, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sees convective cloud activity during certain months because of its geographical and atmospheric conditions.

Convective clouds can quickly develop, especially when there is a mix of humidity, heat, and upper-level winds. Moreover, these clouds often form in the southern and eastern regions of the country, which leads to hailstorms, thunder, and localised rain.

Forecast for Saturday, July 19: Partly Cloudy With Rain Potential

The NCM predicts the weather forecast for Saturday. It predicts that residents could witness fair to partly cloudy conditions in some regions of the country. There is a chance of convective clouds due to convective cloud formation in eastern (Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah) and southern (Al Ain, Liwa) parts of the country.

Sea conditions are expected to be moderate to light in the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea. However, the end could become rough at times, depending on the intensity of the wind. However, the wind will be light to moderate, which could blow from the southeast and northeast. It could reach up to 40 km/hr, which would cause blowing dust and reduced visibility in open areas.

What Caused the Rain and Hail?

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) noted that convection cloud formation was responsible for the unexpected shower this afternoon. As we mentioned before, these clouds often form in the hot months due to the high surface temperature and moisture.

Public Safety and Travel Advisory

Heavy UAE rain hits part of Dubai and Al Ain.

Authorities have requested residents and motorists to stay informed about the official weather conditions and take necessary measures during unpredictable weather conditions.

It would be best to follow the tips mentioned below to deal with the unexpected weather conditions:

  • Drivers are advised to slow down and keep headlights on during rain or dust storms.
  • Beachgoers and boat operators should check sea conditions before venturing out.
  • Those with respiratory conditions are urged to stay indoors during high-dust periods.
  • Monitor NCM updates via the official app or social media.
  • Avoid flood-prone areas, especially during heavy rainfall.
  • Secure outdoor objects, such as garden furniture or tents, in case of high winds.
  • Do not drive through waterlogged roads.
  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms or periods of poor visibility.

Local Reactions: A Welcome Change from the Heat

Dubai Rain takes the public to the outdoors and relieves concerns over the scorching heat.

Indeed, most residents are not prepared for the unexpected rain in some regions of Dubai. However, most of them have welcomed this change because they got some relief from the high temperature and heat. Social media was flooded with comments and videos related to this rainfall. Unfortunately, there is no confirmation that this weather will last long in the region.

Looking Ahead: What to Expect in the Coming Days

The weather is expected to stay stable with an interval of cloud cover in many regions of Dubai. However, the convective cloud activities may continue to happen in some parts of the city. Notably, there is a high chance of these activities in the east and south of the country.

On the other hand, the humidity level is expected to remain high during night and early morning. Therefore, you could see the mist and fog formation in the upcoming days, especially in western coastal and inland areas.
