Dubai Metro Blue Line: Construction Begins with Traffic Diversions in Academic City

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in the UAE has announced that the construction work of the most-awaited Dubai Metro Blue Line has begun. In addition, it is a significant achievement in the transport infrastructure upgrade in the city. 

It is an expansion project worth Dh20.5 billion. Once completed, it is expected to transform daily commuting for over 350,000 residents. Moreover, it could ease congestion and enhance connectivity across the emirate. 

 Traffic Diversions in Academic City

As part of the initial construction phase, the RTA has also announced a temporary traffic diversion in Academic City, which has come into effect immediately. The authority has closed the 63rd street in the direction in front of the German International School, with access routes redirected to the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street. In addition, the school has also given alternative entry and exit points to ease access for students, staff, and parents. 

Authorities advise motorists to plan their journeys in advance to avoid congested areas. In addition, it would be helpful to use alternative routes where it is available. Earlier, similar diversions were reported in Mirdif as a part of the same project. 

 Inside the Dubai Metro Blue Line Project

It is a 30 km rail extension that will feature 14 new stations, including nine elevated and five underground stations. The three stations will serve as significant interchange hubs:

  • Creek Station (connecting to the Green Line at Al Jaddaf)
  • Centrepoint Station (linking to the Red Line at Al Rashidiya)
  • International City 1 Station (a central node on the Blue Line itself)

Dubai Creek Harbour is also a part of the plan, which is an extra iconic station. In addition, it showcases architectural and technological excellence. Moreover, this line is going to operate with 28 high-capacity trains. 

It allows it to carry up to 46,000 travellers per hour in both directions. In addition, it is expected that the number of daily riders to reach 200,000 by 2030. In addition, the same number is projected to rise to 320,000 passengers by 2040. 

Connecting Key Districts Across Dubai

The new metro line is aimed at empowering urban mobility in alignment with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. In addition, the Blue Line will connect nine significant major residential and business districts mentioned below:

  •  Mirdif
  • Al Warqa
  • International City (1 and 2)
  • Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Academic City
  • Ras Al Khor Industrial Area
  • Dubai Creek Harbour
  • Dubai Festival City

These regions are projected to be home to over 1 million residents. In addition, this line is expected to travel between 10 to 25 minutes, which will be only 20 minutes away from many communities. 

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The Blue Line project promises long-term profitability as well as adds to a more sustainable urban nature. In addition, it is expected to give a projected return of more than over Dh56 million. Moreover, it is expected to decrease traffic congestion by 20 percent on the major roads and support the green mobility of green mobility goals. 

Opening Timeline

The Dubai Metro Blue Line is set to open on September 9, 2029, after the completion of the pending construction. In addition, the RTA continues to provide you with‌ regular updates on the status of the project. Moreover, the authority has assured the public that all measures are in place to reduce the disruption during the construction phase.
