According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), a 3.3 magnitude Fujairah earthquake struck the Safad region at 12:35 pm UAE on Friday, August 22. Moreover, the UAE National Seismic Network detected the tremor that was recorded at a shallow depth of 2.3 kilometres.
The NCM confirmed that residents do not feel the quake, and it does not cause any damage or disruptions. In addition, authorities highlighted that such minor tremors happen occasionally in the UAE and do not pose any risk.
Recent UAE Earthquake Activity
These Fajairah earthquakes come only one day after a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Madha region of Oman on Thursday morning. Earlier this month, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck, which residents felt strongly but had no significant effect in Al Sila.
A 2.0 magnitude quake occurred in Khor Fakkan at a depth of 5km on 5 August. However, some residents in the immediate vicinity experienced slight shaking. Still, people in urban centres, like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, did not feel any impact.
Why does the UAE Experience Earthquakes like the Fujairah earthquake?
The UAE is not in a significant earthquake zone. However, the country experiences occasional tremors due to its proximity to the Zagros mountain range. Moreover. The seismically active region. Stretching across Iran and Iraq frequently records earthquakes. Thus, some of the tremors can be felt in the Northern Emirates.
Mohamed Alhassani, acting head of Seismic Monitoring at NCM, explained, “These events, though often centred hundreds of km away. However, they may feel in parts of the UAE, especially in the Northern Emirates.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) is continuously monitoring seismic activity through its nationwide network. So, the authority is providing accurate real-time updates on every UAE earthquake. Therefore, it ensures public safety and clarity.
Residents are advised that minor earthquakes like the Fujairah earthquake are common and rarely have any impact. In addition, the NCM repeats that there is no cause for concern following today’s event.

- Stay alert for falling walls and unstable objects.
- Do not think about entering buildings immediately after a tremor.
