According to the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), Abu Dhabi students could face a ban from using the school bus service if they break safety rules or misbehave during transportation. Additionally, the Department of Municipalities and Transport has released revised safety guidelines to boost student welfare and bus safety.
Key Student Violations That Can Lead to Suspension
The ITC outlined two primary categories of violations that may result in a student being denied bus access. We have mentioned those violations below:
- Safety breaches that endanger themselves or others.
- Disruptive behaviour that causes harm or disturbance to fellow students or the driver.
Additionally, schools have the right to suspend transport service for students whose parents refuse to sign the required acknowledgment form.
Safety and Operational Guidelines for Schools
Schools must follow strict regulations to ensure smooth operations and student safety. We have mentioned the rules below:
- Every bus carrying children under 11 must have a supervisor on board.
- Schools must provide sufficient buses and seats to meet student demand.
- Parents’ contact details should be kept updated.
- Awareness campaigns and safety workshops must be conducted regularly.
- Risk and safety plans should be maintained for school premises and loading zones.
It is important to note that schools cannot impose fees beyond those approved by the Department of Education and Knowledge. In addition, schools can hire only licensed operators for transport service.
Responsibilities for Parents of Abu Dhabi Students
Parents also play an important role in maintaining a safe school bus operation. As a parent, you are required to fulfil the following duties:
- Collect children under 11 from designated stops on time.
- Provide accurate contact details to schools.
- Pay for damages caused by their children to buses.
- Ensure children follow rules, including remaining seated with seatbelts fastened, avoiding hostile behaviour, and boarding/disembarking properly.
The ITC highlighted that repeated violations could result in the suspension of school bus services for the student.
Exceptions for Small-Scale Operations
The ITC confirmed that schools may be exempt from providing buses in cases where bus services are not economically accessible. For example, only a very small number of students may need transportation. However, these schools must submit the proper documents.
A Stronger Commitment to Safety
This new rule shows the commitment of the UAE’s capital to student safety, parental responsibility, and regulated school transport operations. In addition, it sets clear rules for schools, parents, and students. So, the ITC aims to reduce risks and ensure safer travel for children across the capital.
