The Ministry of Education has announced the nationwide ban on the sales and consumption of unhealthy food in the school cafeterias. Moreover, Emarat Al Youm reports that the decision of the UAE bans unhealthy Foods in school aims to protect the physical and mental health of students. In addition, it ensures that schools become healthier learning environments.

UAE Bans Unhealthy Foods in School

Schools are no longer allowed to sell or permit students to bring the following items under this new guideline:

  • Processed meats such as mortadella and sausages
  • Instant noodles
  • Soft drinks and sugary beverages
  • Chocolate, packaged biscuits, chips, cakes, and pastries that are high in sugar and fat
  • Flavoured nuts and peanut-based products (due to allergy risks)

The ministry mentioned that these foods contribute to obesity, chronic illness, and decreased academic performance.

Why the Ban Was Introduced?

The decision comes after the global health suggestions warning against the long-term risk of a poor diet. Moreover, the ministry highlighted that unhealthy foods raise the risk of disease and directly impact concentration, memory, and learning results.

The ministry said, “Schools must be an environment that supports healthy habits. Proper nutrition is the first line of defense against illness and is important for academic success.”

Role of Parents in Children’s Nutrition

The ministry requests parents to play an active role in maintaining their children’s health by preparing balanced meals at home. In addition, the ministry highlighted the importance of a nutritious breakfast by calling it the most important meal of the day. Moreover, a healthy morning meal provides students with energy, boosts memory, and reduces cravings for junk food during school hours.

The new policy also puts the shared responsibility on families and schools to promote healthy eating habits from a young age. Thus, it shapes a strong generation that is able to achieve academic milestones and long-term well-being.

A Step Toward a Healthier Future

This initiative shows the dedication of the UAE to public health and child development. Thus, the Ministry of Education of the UAE is setting a strong example for other countries in the region by restricting unhealthy foods and promoting balanced diets.

We can expect that this ban is going to positively impact the lifestyle choices of children in the nation. In addition, it can help them to adopt healthier habits that last well beyond their school years.
