Abu Dhabi Police Warn Motorists: Stop for School Buses or Face Dh1,000 Fine

The authorities have once again reminded motorists to prioritize the safety of students commuting to or from schools. Actually, the Abu Dhabi Police have highlighted that drivers have to come to a complete stop when a school buses extend its side ‘STOP’ Sign. In short, you have to stop for school buses whether you are approaching from the front or behind. 

This regulation is a part of the “Darab Al Salama 2” awareness campaign. However, it is designed to promote safer school travel across the emirate. Moreover, police highlighted that motorists must maintain a minimum distance of five meters when a bus stops for students’ boarding or alighting.  

 Heavy Penalties for Violators

If you fail to comply with these rules, you must face a fine of Dh 1000 and 10 black points on your driving license. Moreover, the authorities highlight that these penalties are punitive and serve as a deterrent to reckless driving near school buses. 

Why do These Rules about STOP for school buses Matter?

Thousands of yellow school buses dominate the roads in the UAE to transport children to or from school. However, impatient from accidents could lead to a serious accident because buses always stop at multiple points in close succession. 

Authorities further explained that children coming from these buses are always unpredictable. They could suddenly cross the road or run back towards the school buses. Therefore, vehicles have to avoid inching forward or overtaking when the bus stop arm is out. 

Road Safety Awareness

Besides the STOP sign, many school buses display “School On Board” to alert road users. Thus, drivers have been requested to factor school timing into their daily commutes. So, it ensures that they allow extra travel time to avoid frustration during the school hours rush. Moreover, the Abu Dhabi Police confirmed that full cooperation from all road users is important to secure young lives and support safer school transport in the emirate. 

Key Tips for UAE Drivers

  • Always stop when the bus extends its STOP arm – in both directions.
  • Maintain a minimum of 5 meters from the bus.
  • Never overtake or inch forward while students are boarding or alighting.
  • Non-compliance leads to a Dh1,000 fine + 10 black points.

Motorists can play an important role in ensuring that the roads of the UAE remain safe for children by strictly following these rules.
