Dubai Central Laboratory Upgrades Testing to Detect EU-Banned TPO Chemical in Cosmetics

The Dubai Central Laboratory, part of Dubai Municipality, has announced a big upgrade in its cosmetics and personal care testing facilities. However, the lab is now equipped with the cutting-edge technology that is capable of detecting trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), which is a chemical that the European Union recently banned. Moreover, this new testing tool is a big step in the ongoing modernization efforts of Dubai to ensure cosmetic products meet the international safety and quality benchmark.

What Is TPO and Why Does It Matter?

TPO, or trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, is a photoinitiator used widely in gel nail polish. However, it allows the polish to dry fast under the UV light and gives it a glossy and long-lasting finish. It is one of the main reasons behind the popularity of gel manicures across salons.

On the other hand, the compound has come under scrutiny after research indicated that it could affect fertility in animal trials when ingested over a prolonged period. However, there is no direct harm from this chemical in humans. Still, the EU regulator has taken a precautionary step by banning its use.

EU Ban and Its Global Implications

The ban on TPO by the European Union is already effective from the 1st of September. However, this ban mandates that salon owners and manufacturers remove the chemical from their products. Moreover, salons were asked to dispose of the existing TPO-based nail polish and switch to safer options.

On the other hand, manufacturers within the EU are now reformulating their gel products to comply with the new safety standards of the EU. Now, the move by the Central Laboratory to adopt the advanced detection methods shows the proactive stance of the emirate in aligning with the global regulatory trend.

In addition, this move also reinforces the consumer confidence that cosmetic and personal care products sold locally are safe and compliant with international norms.  Plus, such a step also ensures the safety of residents while allowing them to use safe cosmetic products.

Boost safety

Dubai authorities are working tirelessly to strengthen their public health and safety infrastructure. Moreover, initiatives like this tool ensure that beauty and personal care meet the highest standards and international norms. Plus, it is protecting customer trust and market credibility. So, this tool has streamline the way to detect TPO in the gel nailpolish in emirate.
