Earthquake in Philippines Today: 7.6-Magnitude Quake Hits Davao Region, Triggers Tsunami Warning

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Philippines today struck early Friday, i.e, on the 10th of October 2025, off the coast of Davao Oriental. However, these quakes have triggered widespread panic and temporary tsunami warnings across the southern region. In addition, it caused power outages, structural tremors, and forced thousands of residents to evacuate coastal areas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs),  the epicentre of the earthquake was located 62 kilometres (38 miles) southeast of Manay town in Davao Oriental province. Moreover, the tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles). However, it is the level that is occasionally linked to the intense shaking and higher potential damage.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) also confirmed a magnitude 7.3 quake near Mindanao at coordinates  7.28 N, 126.79 E, with a depth of 50 km. In addition, the Davao earthquake was felt across the city, General Santos, and nearby provinces.

Tsunami Warning Issued After Powerful Tremors

Earthquake in Philippines Today

After the earthquake in Philippines today, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu issued a tsunami warning for nearby coastal areas. Moreover, the authority has alerted that the hazardous waves up to 3 metres (10 feet) above normal tide levels could strike within  300 kilometres (186 miles) of the epicentre.

Moreover, authorities requested residents who live near the central and southern Philippine coasts to evacuate to higher ground or move inland. In addition, panic has spread across many towns in Davao Oriental, as reports indicate that people are fleeing their homes and offices due to aftershocks following the main quakes.

The PTWC said the tsunami threat had passed later in the day. However, local authorities are active as a precaution. Moreover, residents have been advised to stay alert for possible aftershocks in the upcoming days.

Davao Region Reports Casualties and Damage

Governor Edwin Jubahib in Davao Oriental province described the quake as one of the strongest in recent years.  He further shared that some buildings suffered cracks and minor structural damage. Moreover, the latest report confirmed 2 casualties in this quake and many sustained injuries due to falling debris and panic-triggered accidents.

Videos shared on the social media handles captured the moment of chaos, where residents fleeing buildings, shaking lamp posts, and emergency sirens blaring across Davao City. Moreover, power outages and communication disruptions were also reported in parts of Mindanao.

Emergency responders and disaster management teams have been deployed across the region to assess the full extent of damage and provide help to affected families.

Regional Impact and Ongoing Safety Efforts

Neighbouring Indonesia has also issued a temporary tsunami warning for northern Sulawesi and Papua. However, it was expected to rise up to 50 centimetres. However, the alert was lifted later. Still, coastal monitoring is active in the region.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has placed all Mindanao provinces on high alert. Moreover, residents are alerted to stay outdoors, avoid damaged buildings, and prepare for aftershocks. Still, the relief teams are disturbing the emergency supplies in the affected regions.

Part of a Series of Recent Philippine earthquakes

The Davao earthquake follows a 4.4-magnitude  tremor recorded just a day earlier on October 9 near Pugo, La Union. However, that tremor was comes after only two weeks after a deadly 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu, which killed at least 74 people and destroyed the heritage structure of Saint Peter the Apostle in Bantayan.

Experts say that this string of earthquakes highlights the location of the country along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plate movements frequently trigger strong earthquakes and volcanic activity.
