Shreyas Iyer Injury Update: Indian Vice-Captain Stable After Spleen Laceration

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer injury has sent shockwaves through the cricket community after he suffered a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Iyer sustained a laceration injury to his spleen and was immediately hospitalised after the incident.

According to the BCCI statement, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI in the India vs Australia match. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”

The 30-year-old cricketer has been moved out of the ICU and is said to be in a delicate but stable condition. Moreover, the Indian team doctor, Dr Rizwan Khan, remains in Sydney to monitor the day-by-day progress of Iyer in consultation with medical specialists from India and Australia.

The Incident: A Brave Catch Gone Wrong

The injury happened when Iyer attempted a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Fortunately, he completed the catch by sprinting backward from the backward point toward the deep third-man region. However, he struck his left rib cage hard on the ground.

Initially, Iyer returned to the dressing room. However, he soon experienced discomfort and was rushed to a Sydney hospital when his vital parameters started fluctuating. Later, medical scans revealed internal bleeding and spleen laceration. Hence, it prompted the doctors to move him into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close observation.

As of now, the condition of Iyer has improved. However, he is under close medical supervision and could stay in the hospital for a few more days before being discharged. Moreover, sources close to the player have revealed that his family members may soon fly to Sydney from Mumbai once visa formalities are completed to be by his side.

A BCCI official told ‌reporters that there is no rush to bring Iyer to India. Moreover, the board, medical staff, and his family have decided to allow him ample recovery time before considering travel.

Recovery Timeline and Future Matches

Initially, it was estimated that Iyer would be out for 3 weeks. However, the doctor now suggests his recovery could take longer due to internal bleeding. Moreover, the exact timeline for his return to competitive cricket is uncertain.

Iyer was currently being considered for the ODI format only, but he was expected to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30. However, it looks impossible now due to his health concerns.

Community and Team Support

Many of Shreyas’ friends are visiting him at the hospital in Sydney to ensure that he has emotional support while away from home. Moreover, fans and teammates have flooded social media with messages of encouragement to wish him a speedy recovery. A team source revealed, “Shreyas is a fighter, he is responding well to the treatments, and doctors are optimistic. The team and management are in constant touch with him”.

The Shreyas Iyer injury is a sharp reminder of the risk that a professional athlete faces on the field. However, his condition is stable now, but the focus is on ensuring a complete and safe recovery before he resumes play.
