New Zealand pacer Blair Tickner made a sensational return to international cricket with a match-winning spell. He claimed 4 wickets for 34 runs as the Black Caps bowled out England for only 176 in the 2nd ODI at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

However, the performance of Tickner came after a two-year absence from international cricket. Yet, he delivered one of the career-best performances in history. Hence, it was more than just a sporting comeback, as it was deeply personal.

The 32-year-old fast bowler had stepped away from the game as his wife, Sarah Tickner, battled leukemia. Now, she is in remission and undergoing chemotherapy. So, her recovery has given him a renewed motivation. Tickner said, “Each day is a blessing”. However, he seems visibly emotional as he reflects on his journey back to the field.

Tickner Steps Up Amid Injury Woes

Tickner’s inclusion came due to Matt Henry’s calf injury, which adds to the growing list of New Zealand fitness concerns. He was originally drafted in as a backup of Kyle Jamieson. Still, he seized the chance in stunning fashion

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santmer inserted England again after he won a rain-delayed toss. However, the leadership of Jacob Duffy and Tickner struck at regular intervals to leave England reeling, despite not finding the early swings in as Mount Maunganui.

England’s Batting Collapses Again

The battling lineups of England collapsed for the second time in 5 days against the disciplined bowling attack of New Zealand in England vs New Zealand. After posting just 223 in the first ODI, England managed to bundle out for 175 in 36 overs. Hence, it continues their worrying trend of inconsistency at the top order.

The inning of visitors lacks partnership, as no one stands last for more than 38 runs. Jamie Smith (16), Jacob Bethell (18), and Brydon Carse (9) all fell to poor shot selection, gifting their wickets away cheaply. On top of that, Harry Brook also managed only 34 before miscuing a cut to a point. However, he was a hero from the first ODI with a brilliant 135 runs.

Jamie Overton was the only batter to offer resistance, as he was brisk 42 off 27 balls before Tickner dismissed him with a clever change of pace.

New Zealand’s Bowlers Deliver a Complete Performance

There is no doubt that Blair Tickner was the standout performer of the match. Still, Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner all played important supporting roles. Bracewell’s delivery that bowled Sam Curran — pitching outside off and clipping the stump — was one of the highlights of the match.

The batting approach of England oscillated between aggression and carelessness. As a result, they were bowled out with 14 overs remaining. Moreover, it was the tenth time that England failed to bat through their 50-over innings.

Jofra Archer Returns but Can’t Save England

England had hope for a moral boost with the return of Jofra Archer, as he played his first ODI against New Zealand since the 2019 World Cup final. However, his inclusion in place of Luke Wood could not change the fortune. Hence, the visitors’ lack of composure with the bat left them facing a 2-0 series deficit. However, there is still one match left.

Blair Tickner: A Win for the Heart and the Team

The victory went beyond numbers and wickets for Blair Tickner. Instead, it marked a comeback fueled by resilience, faith, and family. Moreover, his four-wicket haul seal the game and symbolized his personal triumph over adversity.

With this win, New Zealand are now 2-0 up in the three-match series. Hence, they secured the series with one game still to play. Moreover, the critical performance left fans at Seddon Park inspired, and England searching for answers ahead of their next encounter.
