The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed plans to roll out the CBSE Global Curriculum from April 2026 in a landmark development for Indian education abroad. However, the announcement happened during the first international and 31st annual Sahodaya School Complexes conference held in Dubai. Hence, it gathered more than 800 school leaders and education experts from India and the Gulf region.
On the other hand, this strategic move signals the mission of the CBSE to evolve into a global education authority. In addition, it offers curriculum standards aligned with international benchmarks and NEP 2020 (National Education Policy).
A Milestone for Indian Students Abroad

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is home to 106 CBSE-affiliated schools. Moreover, the country represents the largest overseas education network of the board. In addition, the introduction of a dedicated international curriculum is set to reshape academic prospects for thousands of students,
According to Dr Ram Shankar, Director of CBSE Regional Office & Centre of Excellence in Dubai, the curriculum is currently in its draft stage. He said, “Stakeholder discussions are ongoing. The curriculum focuses on the global benchmarks, infrastructure standards, teacher qualifications, and academic practices. After being finalised, it will be implemented stepwise”.
Why CBSE Global Curriculum Matters — NEP 2020 and Global Competitiveness
This initiative aligns with the NEP 2020 reform vision of India. Hence, it prioritises the following elements:
- Competency-based learning
- Holistic development
- Flexibility in subject choices
- Vocational and technical education
- Internationally benchmarked standards
The CBSE Global Curriculum aims to provide students with a future-ready education while preserving a strong cultural and academic root. However, International schools affiliated with other boards will also adopt the new curriculum. Yet, the CBSE schools in India might offer it as an additional option.
Learning from CBSE-i Experience
CBSE launched the CBSE-I program in 2010, which was an inquiry-based and internationally aligned with the pilot curriculum. However, it was discontinued by the board due to operational challenges in 2017.
The CBSE officials have clarified that lessons learned from CBSE-I are going to shape the success of the new CBSE Global Curriculum. Hence, it will ensure the following things:
- Efficient implementation
- Wider adoption
- Strong policy support
- Global recognition
Full Support from UAE & GCC Regulators
Senior officials from KHDA (Dubai), ADEK (Abu Dhabi), SPEA (Sharjah), and the education ministries of Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar expressed strong support for the move. Moreover, they have discussed the following key areas:
- Curriculum contextualisation for Gulf culture & academic needs
- Teacher qualification & training standards
- Vocational & technical streams
- Equivalency benchmarks & certification recognition
- Balance between academic excellence and affordability
Regulators commended the CBSE Schools in the GCC for their high quality, compliance, and student performance.
Holistic Progress Card Launched
The event also saw the introduction of the CBSE Holistic Progress Card (Middle Stage) to promote a multi-dimensional evaluation. However, it is another NEP-aligned reform to boost the student competency assessment.
What This Means for Parents & Students in UAE
| Benefit | Impact |
| Global-standard learning | Better international university opportunities |
| Flexible & skill-based academics | Career-focused education pathways |
| Vocational training alignment | Industry-ready skills |
| Cultural connection + global outlook | Balanced identity & competitiveness |
Key Takeaways
The launch of the CBSE Global Curriculum is a historic transformation in the Indian International education, especially for the expats families that are living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Moreover, the Gulf leaders have also extended support to this education reform. Hence, CBSE is set to redefine the global education standards while preserving its core values.
It is important to note that the roll-out timeline might depend on the ongoing consultation. However, parents and students can look forward to a future-ready, globally competitive learning experience starting in 2026.
