Dulquer Salmaan’s much-anticipated Tamil–Telugu period drama ‘Kaantha’  has finally hit the theatres throughout the world, including in the UAE. Stay tuned with our Kaantha Movie Review to explore whether you should invest your time in this movie.

The movie has brought a nostalgic blend of retro filmmaking, ego clashes, emotional turmoil, and a crime investigation twist. Directed by debutant Selvamani Selvaraj, the film aims high with its ambitious story, striking period visuals, and powerhouse performances.  However, it struggles to maintain its momentum.

Story: A Period Drama Rooted in Classic Filmmaking

Dulquer Salmaan's Kaantha Movie Review

The film has been set in the 1950s and 60s Madras film industry. However, it follows the turbulent relationship between veteran director Ayya (Samuthirakani) and his former protégé–turned-superstar TK Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan). After a decade of their bitter fallout, Ayya decides to revive his dream project, Saantha, which is a tribute to his mother. However, the superstar agrees to be a part of this project to prove his dominance on the set, instead of out of respect.

The narrative becomes intensified when the debutante heroine Kumari (Bhagyashri Borse) enters the narrative. However, she was the emotional anchor of the film. Still, she triggers a deeper conflict between the two men, as unexpected romance, fragile egos, and hidden agendas slowly unfold until the film abruptly shifts gears into a murder investigation led by Inspector Devaraj/Phoenix (Rana Daggubati).

Strong Performances Anchor an Uneven Screenplay

Kaantha Movie Review of Dulquer Salmaan

Dulquer Salman has once again proved his experience with layered characters. Moreover, his portrayal as TK Mahadevan is among the finest performances of his career. However, Mahadevan is the superstar washed in ego yet torn between love, guilt, and responsibility. Hence, Salman has shone in the film-within-a-film sequences and the emotional breakdowns.

Samuthirakani delivers a compelling counterforce as Ayya, who is the aging filmmaker whose passion clashes with the arrogance of Ayya. Moreover, their confrontation holds the film well, especially in the first half.

In contrast, Bhagyashri Borse also stand out with a sensitive and expressive performance that acts as the heart of the movie. Moreover, her character also brings depth, innocence, and emotional weight to the narrative.

The entry of Rana Daggubati brings initial excitement. However, his investigative sequences feel tonally disconnected from the film’s retro backdrop.

Technical Brilliance with Noticeable Flaws

Visually, Kaantha is stunning. The choreography of  Dani Sanchez-Lopez recreates the old-world charm of vintage studios, dimly lit sets, and period detailing. Moreover, Ramalingam also deserves high praise for his authenticity. However, the film struggles with the following factors:

  • However, the film suffers from:
  • Sluggish pacing in the second half
  • Repetitive investigation scenes
  • Uneven editing that stretches the runtime
  • Music that fails to elevate emotional beats

Despite the ambitious narrative,  the screenplay falters after the interval because it dilutes the emotional impact created in the first half.

A Balanced Kaantha Movie Review for UAE Viewers

Kaantha Movie Review - Dulquer Salmaan

The UAE audiences, especially fans of Dulquer Salman, are likely to appreciate the strong performances, retro atmosphere, and unique storytelling approach of the film. However, those who are expecting a tight thriller or a consistently engaging drama may find the second half underwhelming.

The film is neither a full-blown murder mystery nor a classic period romance. Instead, it tries to mix genres, which is generally not effective. However, some of you might enjoy it based on your taste.

Verdict: A Bold Attempt That Falls Short of Greatness

  • Ideal for: Dulquer fans, lovers of retro cinema, viewers interested in character-driven dramas
  • May disappoint: Thriller fans, audiences who prefer tighter pacing and crisp narratives

In short, Kaantha is s visually rich, emotionally layered, and driven by exceptional performances. However, uneven writing, a dull second half, and an overstretched investigation track prevent it from becoming the masterpiece it aims to be.
