The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) with Yas Clinic Khalifa City has achieved a historic milestone for autoimmune disease. Actually, the authorities have successfully administered CAR-T cell Therapy for autoimmune disease to a 38-year-old man battling severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and triple-positive antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
This is one of the earliest cases in the Middle East where CAR-T therapy has been applied to treat a complex autoimmune condition. However, the therapy is generally used to treat cancer patients. However, this new treatment gives a new hope for those with treatment-resistant diseases.
A Complex Case of Survival
The patient suffered many life-threatening complications, including diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, recurrent subdural haematomas, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and Budd-Chiari syndrome. Moreover, conventional treatments with immunosuppressants and anticoagulants failed to control the disease.
After the detailed evaluation, doctors at ADSCC and Yas Clinic Khalifa City selected him for CAR-T therapy. Notably, it is the revolutionary treatment created to reset the immune system.
Prof. Yendry Ventura, CEO of ADSCC, called the case “a bold step forward in treating severe autoimmune conditions after years of research, innovation, and patient-focused care.
Early Signs of Recovery After CAR-T Therapy for Autoimmune Disease
After treatment, the patient showed promising signs of immune recovery and has since been discharged. However, he is still under close monitoring with a multidisciplinary care plan to track his remission progress and clotting risks.
Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic Khalifa City, described the success as a transformative milestone redefining standards for autoimmune disease treatment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
UAE’s Role in Global Healthcare Innovation
This achievement has further supported the reputation of Abu Dhabi as a global hub for medical innovation. Moreover, the ADSCC, popular for launching the first bone marrow program in the UAE, has earned international recognition with its FACT-accredited cellular therapy laboratory. However, it is the first in the country and one of only two in the region.
The successful CAR-T therapy case set a new milestone for patient care. In addition, it also shows the broader vision of the UAE to become a leader in regenerative medicine and advanced healthcare solutions.
Looking Ahead
Doctors highlight that CAR-T therapy is still in its early stages. However, this breakthrough presents new possibilities for patients in the UAE and worldwide. However, Abu Dhabi is demonstrating its commitment to advancing science, saving lives, and enhancing healthcare standards in the region.
