According to the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), under the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Abu Dhabi has reached a significant milestone in its smart mobility journey by hitting 600,000 km of accident-free operation by autonomous taxi. Surprisingly, 99% of operations were completed without human interaction, as 40000 successful trips were completed by a fleet of 22 self-driving vehicles. Therefore, it highlights a high level of technological maturity and safety.
Advanced Technology and Strategic Partnerships in Autonomous Taxi
Notably, vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and AI. Moreover, remote monitoring from advanced operations centers supports this system. Therefore, this tech-enabled safety layer ensures an immediate intervention whenever needed. However, the intervention is rarely needed. So, this technology is boosting the public trust.
Autonomous taxis are currently in the following areas:
- Yas Island
- Saadiyat Island
- Roads to Zayed International Airport
- Al Reem Island (new)
- Al Maryah Island (new)
This development is a result of the strategic collaboration between eRide, Uber, TXAI, and the ITC, under the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) framework.
Government-Led Sustainability Goals
This initiative is part of smart mobility solutions that aim to address the following factors:
- Make 25% of all trips autonomous by 2040
- Reduce carbon emissions by 15%
- Cut traffic accidents by 18%
Dr. Abdullah Al Ghafli, Acting Director General of the ITC, highlighted that this move supports the long-term move of Abu Dhabi to develop a safer, more efficient, and sustainable transport system. In addition, he also said that it aims to improve the overall quality of life for residents and optimize the mobility experience through strategic collaboration.
Public Satisfaction and Future-Ready Infrastructure
User feedback shows a high satisfaction level in terms of safety, routing, and ride comfort. Moreover, flexible regulation and smart infrastructure are some of the reasons behind this success. On top of that, real-time data to improve the autonomous algorithm has also pushed its success.
Abu Dhabi is continuously expanding its operations for autonomous mobility across the region. Therefore, the Emirates empowers its position as a global smart city leader and a model for AI-powered transportation throughout the world.
Driving Toward a Smart Future
Abu Dhabi is leading in smart mobility innovation because its autonomous taxi program is becoming a global benchmark. Moreover, the emirate is on track to become a future-ready smart city, as further expansion is underway.
