Abu Dhabi Judicial Department Warns of Dh1 Million Penalty for Electronic Fraud

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has issued a strong warning against electronic fraud. Moreover, it highlights that offenders could face fines of up to Dh1 million and a prison term of at least one year. However, the statement comes under the provision of Federal Decree-Law No. (34) of 2021 on Countering Rumors and Cybercrimes. So, it reinforces the zero-tolerance approach of the UAE to online fraud.

Legal Framework and Penalties

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has referred to Article 40 of the cybercrime law in an official awareness post shared on social media. However, the article clearly stipulates penalties for people convicted of electronic fraud. Moreover, the law states the following punishment for the offenders:

  • Imprisonment for no less than one year
  • A fine ranging between Dh250,000 and Dh1 million
  • Or one of the two penalties

The department highlighted that these penalties are focused on deterring people from misusing digital platforms for financial or personal benefits.

Scope of Electronic Fraud Crimes

According to the law, electronic fraud covers a wide range of activities. Moreover, this includes unlawfully taking possession of movable property, financial benefits, and official documents using fraudulent methods or by impersonating another person.

The fraudulent actions might involve using a false name, making a fake identity, or misusing information networks, electronic systems, or digital technology platforms.

Protecting the UAE’s Digital Economy

The  United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a global hub for digital transformation and innovation. Moreover, it has been actively supporting its cybersecurity framework to protect people and institutions. By introducing the strict punishment, the ADJD aims to create public confidence in the online platform. Moreover, this step also ensures a secure digital environment for residents and businesses.

Call for Public Awareness

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) also requested residents like you to stay alert against any suspicious online activity. Moreover, the authority has also suggested reporting any fraudulent cases as soon as possible to the police or the relevant authority. However, awareness campaigns like this are part of the broader efforts of the UAE to strengthen cybercrime, protect digital assets, and maintain trust in electronic transactions.

The most recent warning serves as a reminder that online fraud will not go unpunished, as the nation continues to expand its digital economy. Moreover, offenders are going to face severe legal consequences.
