The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has introduced an AI-powered traffic light system (ramp metering) at the seven major entry points along Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. So, this advanced system positions Abu Dhabi as one of the first cities in the world to accept this advanced traffic management solution. Hence, it further boosts its reputation for innovation and smart mobility.
What is the Smart Traffic Light System?
This new system will use AI-powered cameras and sensors to monitor the real-time traffic conditions. Unlike traditional signals, these smart lights adjust timing based on traffic density. So, you can see the details related to how this system works below:
- During peak hours, the lights limit the number of vehicles entering the main road to reduce congestion.
- During off-peak hours, the system allows a greater flow of vehicles. So, it ensures a smooth traffic movement.
The system activates the lights only when it detects congestion. Therefore, it offers flexibility and efficiency throughout the day.
Where Will the System Be Implemented?
As we mentioned above, the authority is installing these smart signals at seven access points to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. We have listed those seven points below:
- Shakhbout bin Sultan Street
- Dhafeer Street
- Hadbat Al Ghubainah Street (outbound)
- Salama bint Butti Street
- Al Dhafra Street
- Rabdan Street
- Umm Yifina Street exit (inbound)
The officials select these locations on the basis of their traffic density and strategic importance.
Expert Insight
Acting Director General of ITC, Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, said, “The smart traffic light system is a robust step forward. So, it empowers the position of Abu Dhabi as the leader in accepting innovative mobility solutions. By using Artificial Intelligence, we can handle the vehicle flow more precisely, reduce congestion, and improve overall road efficiency”.
In addition, he also highlighted how the system will boost the quality of life and support the sustainability of the growing transport network of Abu Dhabi.
Why AI-Powered Smart Traffic Light System Matters?
The goal of this campaign is to help Abu Dhabi build a smart, safe, and sustainable mobility ecosystem. In addition, the campaign has the following goals:
- Reduce road congestion.
- Improve traffic safety.
- Support the needs of a improving population and economy.
- Contribute to environmental sustainability by cutting idle time on roads.
Abu Dhabi is achieving a new milestone with the introduction of this system. In addition, the project delivers real benefits to daily commuters.
