AI to predict diseases before symptoms appear in Abu Dhabi hospitals. As the capital city is using artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the UAE healthcare system and help residents live longer and healthier lives. However, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has introduced an AI-powered patient risk profile that can predict the chances of diseases like cancer or diabetes before symptoms appear. Indeed, you have read it right! The emirate is using AI to predict diseases.
The groundbreaking system was announced during the GITEX Global 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Hence, it marks a big step towards a smarter and more proactive healthcare ecosystem in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Part of Abu Dhabi’s Three-Pillar Healthcare Strategy
The initiatives align with the three-pillar strategy of Abu Dhabi. Hence, it focuses on longevity, best-in-class care, and system resilience. According to Ibrahim Al Jallaf, Executive Director of Digital Health at DoH Abu Dhabi, the system empowers physicians by giving a detailed patient risk profile covering 14 different diseases.
Al Jallaf said, “It informs the physician about the probability of patients developing diseases over lifelong data. It also explains which lab tests or visits triggered the recommendation, which gives deeper insights for early interventions”.
How Does the AI to Predict Diseases Work?
The AI tool scans an entire medical record of a patient since birth, which identifies subtle patterns that might go unnoticed by humans. So, this data-driven approach allows doctors to act before the disease fully develops. In addition, it enables preventive care and early treatment.
Al Jallaf explained, “The system looks at trends even humans would not catch. It helps physicians start treating patients before the disease happens – so people live longer and healthier lives. “ It is important to note that the technology will not replace doctors, but it enhances their capabilities.
He highlighted, “AI supports the physicians, not replaces them. It gives explainable results – telling the physician why someone has medium risk – but the final decision always rests with the doctor.”
Integrated Across All Hospitals and Clinics
Now, the AI-driven system is integrated across the healthcare network of Abu Dhabi. Hence, all hospitals and clinics in the capital are connected to the patient risk portal. So, this step ensures that physicians can get complete access to the complete patient’s history instantly.
The health information exchange of the emirate, even for the first-time visitor to a clinic, has their 360-degree health record readily available because of Malaffi. Moreover, Al Jallaf confirmed, “It is 100 percent covered -every person in Abu Dhabi is included in this AI risk model.”
This seamless integration improves coordination, reduces delays in care. In addition, it allows for the personalized treatment plans from the very first consultation.
AI Language Models Supporting Doctors and Patients
The AI ecosystem of Abu Dhabi extends beyond diagnostics. Plus, the DoH has implemented two large language models (LLMs) created to help doctors and empower patients. Below is the list of other AI tools:
- AI Physician Assistant
This tool allows doctors to quickly query patient data, like recent blood tests or anomalies, and receive summarized and relevant insights. Plus, it saves time and helps physicians focus more on patient interaction than paperwork.
- Sahatna AI Module
It is integrated into the Sahatapp app. Plus, this new feature allows residents to ask health-related questions in natural language. Hence, it helps them better understand their wellbeing and navigate healthcare services.Al Jallaf added, “When physicians are with doctors, AI ensures they can focus on them. And for patient, Sahatna helps them to take charge of their health”.
