A London-born teenager, Carlo Acutis, is all set to become the first millennial saint. So, it is a landmark moment in Catholic history that will unfold this Sunday. However, Carlo is also popular as the “God’s influencer”. Hence, Pope Leo XIV in Rome will preside over the canonisation to mark his first canonisation ceremony.
A Modern-Day Saint with a Digital Legacy
Carlo was born in 1991 to Italian parents. He spent a few months in the United Kingdom (UK) before moving back to Milan. However, he lived an ordinary childhood with video games, hiking, and football. Still, he created his faith at a very young age. By his teenage years, he had created a groundbreaking website to document Eucharistic miracles using technology to spread Catholic teaching to the world.
Carlo’s approach to faith has given him the title “God’s influencer”. Moreover, his ability to connect with the digital generation made him relatable to millions of young catholics. One of his London followers said, “The fact that you can think of a saint playing Super Mario and wearing jeans is holiness feels closer than ever.”
From Tragedy to Global Pilgrimage
The life of Carlo was unfortunately cut short at 15 years old because he succumbed to acute leukemia in 2006. He was buried in Assisi, Italy, which is already a popular pilgrimage site due to its connection with St. Francis of Assisi.
Today, millions visit the glass-fronted tomb of Carlo, where he lies dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a sweatshirt. So, it symbolizes his daily life. Moreover, Our Lady of Dolours Church in Chelsea in London has also become a site of pilgrimage because he was titled there.
Miracles and the Road to Sainthood
The Catholic church wants proof of miracles that the candidate attributes. However, there were two miracles: one of a Brazilian child and another of a Costa Rican student. Notably, the Vatican recognizes them officially as scientifically inexplicable and connected to the intercession of Carlos. In 2018, the Vatican declared him “Venerable” and in 2020 “Blessed.” Now, his coronation today leads him toward sainthood. Hence, it is an unusual move in the history of the church.

The Vatican hopes Carlos’ story will motivate young people globally. Moreover, his canonisation shows how faith can grow in the digital age. So, it proves that holiness can be lived in monasteries and online.
