Superstar Rajinikanth has once again proved that he is the undisputed king of Indian Cinema with Coolie Box Office Collection Day 1. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, it stormed into theatres on August 14 and broke box office records. In addition, Coolie has become the biggest opening of his career.
According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie earned an estimated ₹65 crore nett in India on its first day. However, a report from trade analyst Ramesh Bala revealed that the film earned an impressive ₹170 crore gross worldwide. Therefore, it marks the highest-ever domestic opening for a Rajinikanth film. In addition, the number has crossed blockbuster collections like Jailer (₹48.35 crore) and 2.0 (₹23 crore).
Coolie vs War 2 at the Box Office
The release date saw an intense competition with Hrithik Roshan’s War 2, which also targeted the Pan-India market. Despite bad reviews, War 2 still made a substantial ₹52 crore on its first day. On the other hand, the occupancy rate of Coolie averaged an extraordinary 86.99%. However, the action movie at 94.32% during the night shows.
Historic Milestone for Tamil Cinema
Now, Coolie is the first Tamil movie to achieve such an international milestone that grossing 150 crores. Moreover, trade experts predict that the film will enter the ₹100 crore India club within two days, possibly even by the end of its second day in theatres, because of Independence Day and Janamashtami leading the long weekend, boosting footfall.
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Best After Leo
Unfortunately, Coolie could not beat the record-breaking Leo (₹76.2 crore opening). However, it outperforms other movies in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) such as Vikram (₹37.5 crore) and Kaithi (₹6.4 crore). Moreover, this action-packed entertainer has an iconic cast, including Nagarjuna Akkineni, Aamir Khan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj.
Celebrating 50 Years of Rajinikanth
