Dubai Airport Trials Game-Changing Security Tech: No Need to Remove Liquids or Laptops

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the world’s busiest airport in terms of international hubs. Now, it has taken a move set to redefine the air travel experience by trialling new security technology that lets passengers like you pass without removing laptops or liquids over 100 ml from their bags. The trial is part of the ongoing strategy at Dubai Airport to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency without expanding its physical infrastructure.

What’s Changing at Dubai Airport?

Currently, you must remove electronic devices and liquids from your cabin baggage at security checkpoints. However,  new state-of-the-art scanners are now being trialled at Terminal 1, 2, and 3. The British company “Smith Detection” developed these scanners under a contract given by the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).

This advanced technology uses 3D X-Ray imaging and automated detection. Therefore, it allows passengers like you to keep all items, including their devices, inside their bags during the safety check. The system highlights similar upgrades being adopted in Europe.

Why This Matters: Efficiency + Security

During an interaction with the Gulf News, Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, highlighted that the DXB has grown 20% in the last decade without adding major infrastructure. The new scanners are aimed at optimizing the existing system and enhancing safety.

He said, “The priority is ensuring absolute security. The second thing is improving speed and efficiency. We are already witnessing quicker and more reliable services”.

The need for streamlined operation is more important than ever because 46 million passengers passed through the DXB in the first half of this year, which is a 2.3% increase year-on-year.

When Will This Roll Out Fully?

As of now, there are no confirmed dates for the complete implementation. However, Griffith noted that installations and trials are progressing fine. If the delivery timelines are met, the new rule could be rolled out across all terminals soon. In addition, he said, “This will make things easier for customers, better for staff, and boost the reputation of the Dubai International Airport.

Global Aviation Shift Towards Seamless Travel

The UAE is investing heavily in aviation technology.  Recently, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi launched a facial recognition technology for the check-in process. It offers a near-instant security clearance at the airport. Now, the Dubai Airport is bringing a new change with this development.
