Dubai Metro and Tram Users Shift to Digital nol Card Top-Ups in H1 2025

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed a major shift in how metro and tram commuters in Dubai top up their nol card. In addition, the authority has revealed digital channels are increasingly replacing the old cash methods in the first half of this year, i.e, 2025. 

RTA’s Push for Smarter Commuting through the nol card and digital payments

This change is a part of RTA’s ongoing digital transformation strategy. Furthermore, the authority has implemented smart top-up machines, ticket vending kiosks, a public awareness campaign, and revised minimum top-up requirements at the metro stations. Furthermore, these methods aim to make commuting more faster and more convenient. In addition, these measures aligned with the vision for a smart mobility network. 

Surge in Digital Engagement

The digital adoption has surged in the transport system of Dubai. Here are the stats that proves it:

  • 20% increase in digital top-up transactions via smart ticket vending machines compared to H1 2024.
  • 28% drop in total transactions via vending machines. It showcases the move away from manual and cash-based interactions.
  • 37% decline in cash-based top-ups at ticket sales offices due to higher minimum thresholds and the convenience of online and mobile payments.
  • Digital transactions at ticket sales offices fell by 6%, which indicates a preference for self-service smart machines and mobile platforms.

Overall, the total nol card top-up transactions at ticket sales offices have dropped by 26 percent in the first six months of 2025.  

Operational Benefits and Reduced Technical Issues

The operational shift towards the digital method has improved the overall user experience. In addition, it has improved the operational efficiency. According to the RTA, fewer physical transactions have reduced the technical issues at ticket machines by 80 percent. Moreover, the authority has revealed that a notable reduction in cash handling costs has freed up resources for further infrastructure and service improvement. 

RTA’s Vision for the Future

This RTA move has aligned with its broader goal of giving smarter and efficient public transport service while increasing commuter satisfaction. In addition, the authority aims to reduce its reliance on cash and decrease the service delays. 

Moreover, the authority is focused on offering a seamless travel experience for metro and tram users through promoting digital adoption.  Dubai is moving towards a journey to turned into one of the smartest cities in the world. So, such initiatives play an important part in shaping sustainable and tech-driven urban mobility.
