Dubai Opens Major 800-Metre Tunnel to Ease Traffic Between Key Highways

RTA has revealed a transformative 800-metre tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street. Moreover, it is designed to greatly improve traffic flow and decrease congestion among the four main highways:  Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Khail Road.

The newly opened tunnel is a base feature of the Umm Suqeim Street Development Project. In addition, it extends over 4.6 km from Al Khail Road to Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Moreover, it has four lanes in each direction.

In addition, the tunnel increases the vehicle’s capacity on the street to 16000 cars per hour and cuts the travel time by 61 percent from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes.

Strategic Connectivity Across Dubai through an 800-metre tunnel

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the tunnel’s role in enhancing Dubai’s east–west and north–south road connectivity. So, he said, “ This development is one of the important projects for boosting connectivity between the major transport corridors in Dubai.”

It will serve areas like Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park. Moreover, the corridor supports more than one million residents to further underscore its citywide impact.

Smart Technology Integration

This corridor also set a milestone for the smart infrastructure because RTA used drones and AI-powered tools to analyse and oversee the construction. Furthermore, these innovations improved operational efficiency, halved the survey time, and enabled real-time tracking.

According to Al Tayer, this forward-thinking approach has boosted decision-making and doubled the on-site monitoring. Moreover, these tools helped cut field survey time by 60 percent and increase the monitoring efficiency by 40 percent through imaging of time-lapse.

A Long-Term Vision

This tunnel is part of a series of developments in Umm Suqeim Street. The RTA built two bridges and many signalised intersections in 2013. Moreover, a major bridge was added to link Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South. Notably, these ongoing effort of Dubai shows the commitment of the RTA to future-proofing the transportation network in the emirate.

Moreover, this corridor transformation on the Umm Suqeim Street is a strategic focus on sustainable urban growth and seamless mobility. In addition, the lane also focuses on smart city innovation. So, residents living in this emirate must be ready to live in an environment with great developments.
