Dubai Police has released a powerful reminder to drivers that driving too slowly can be just as harmful as exceeding the speed limit. Hence, the authority highlighted that drivers might face a Dh 400 fine if they drive below the minimum speed or give way to faster vehicles.
Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, explained that slow driving in fast lanes disrupts traffic flow and causes sudden braking or unsafe lane changes, which significantly raises the risk of road accidents.
He told Al Khaleej Arabic daily, “Many drivers think slow driving is safe, but it is a serious traffic violation in reality that endangers lives.”
Why Slow Driving is a Serious Risk
Brig. Bin Suwaidan shared that driving below the minimum permitted speed (especially in the left lane) forces other motorists to overtake from the right. Thus, this behavior often results in dangerous accidents, particularly on busy highways and intercity roads. Hence, the police highlighted that it is important to maintain proper speed as it is an important safety measure to ensure smoother traffic and reduce accident risks.
Safety Guidelines for Motorists
Dubai police request motorists to adopt the following driving habits to protect lives and keep flowing effectively:
- Keep right if driving slower: Reserve the left lane for overtaking and faster-moving vehicles.
- Maintain lane discipline: Avoid frequent or unnecessary lane changes.
- Signal properly: Always use indicators before changing lanes.
- Avoid right-side overtaking: Ensure there is enough distance before making safe maneuvers.
A Clear Message for UAE Drivers
Dubai Police has always shared the importance of road discipline as a part of the ongoing traffic safety campaign. Now, this reminder serves as a timely warning for drivers who underestimate the danger of slow speeds because thousands of vehicles on urban and intercity roads commute daily.
Brig. Bin Suwaidan said, “Every person has the responsibility to follow traffic rules. Seeing speed limits, using lanes correctly, and respecting other road users are important to prevent accidents and protect lives.“
Slow driving is dangerous
Drivers across the UAE must understand that slow driving is not safe. So, you can contribute to safer roads and avoid unnecessary fines by following the correct lane and maintaining the proper speed. It would be best to understand the responsibility of driving while driving on roads.
