Asia flight disruption: Emirates, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia Hit as 2,700+ Flights Cancelled or Delayed

More than 2,700 flights were disrupted across Asia today. Hence, it has triggered travel chaos for passengers flying between Asia, the Middle East, the US, and Oceania. 224 flight cancellations and over 2,550 delays were included in the disruption. In addition, Asia flight disruption has affected major global hubs like Dubai International Airport, Singapore Changi, Tokyo Haneda, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and Hong Kong International Airport.

The impact has been significant for the UAE-based travellers. This is because knock-on delays are affecting Emirates, flydubai, and connecting long-haul routes to Europe, North America, and Australia.

Asia Flight Disruptions: What Happened?

According to aviation disruption data, airports across Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East experienced operational strain due to a mix of weather conditions, air traffic congestion, and airline operational issues.

Japan: Cancellation Hotspot

Japan becomes the hotspot for Asia flight disruption as it has recorded the highest number of flight cancellations in the following airports:

  • New Chitose (CTS): 133 cancellations, 144 delays
  • Tokyo Haneda (HND): 84 cancellations, 433 delays
  • Narita (NRT): 6 cancellations, 219 delays

Domestic connections in Japan were also hit hardest, which left passengers stranded and rebooking queues overwhelmed. 

Singapore Changi (SIN)

  • 458 delays, zero cancellations
  • Most delays are linked to Singapore Airlines and Scoot
  • Ripple effects reached Europe, Korea, Japan, and Australia

Kuala Lumpur International (KUL)

  • 690 delays. Hence, it becomes Asia’s biggest delay hotspot
  • Heavy disruption from AirAsia Group, Malaysia Airlines, and Malindo Air

Dubai International (DXB)

  • 359 delays, no cancellations
  • Emirates (125 delays) and flydubai (112 delays)
  • UAE travellers experienced missed connections to Europe and North America

Hong Kong International (HKG)

  • 247 delays and 1 cancellation
  • Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express most affected

Many big airlines faced network-wide pressures. Here are the top airlines impacted by the Asia flight disruption:

  • AirAsia Group: 310+ delays across KUL and SIN
  • Japan Airlines (JAL): 248+ delays, 38 cancellations
  • ANA / ANA Wings: 150+ delays, 32 cancellations
  • Air Do: 80 cancellations, mainly in Japan
  • Singapore Airlines: 147 delays
  • Scoot: 106 delays
  • Emirates: 125 delays (no cancellations)
  • flydubai: 112 delays

Airlines in the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) have avoided cancellation. However, delays gave caused schedule knock-on effects across global routes.

Besides today’s mass disruption, 15 confirmed flight cancellations were reported earlier across Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The following are those routes:

  • Bahrain
  • Honolulu
  • Guam
  • Melbourne
  • Russia
  • China

Flights from Singapore Changi to Bahrain and Taiwan to the US and Pacific Islands were among those cancelled. Hence, these flight cancellations directly impacted Middle East-bound passengers. 

How UAE Travellers Are Being Affected

If you are a traveller flying from via Dubai, you should expect the following things:

  • Expect longer layovers and rolling delays
  • Higher risk of missed onward connections
  • Increased chance of baggage delays
  • Rebooking lines and last-minute gate changes at major hubs

Till now, there have been no flight cancellations in the UAE. However, you can experience delays due to aircraft rotation issues.

  • Rebook early if delays exceed connection buffers
