Indian Singer Zubeen Garg Dies at 52 in Scuba Diving Accident in Singapore

Popular Indian Singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has tragically passed away at the age of 52 after a scuba diving incident in Singapore. However, the incident happened on Friday when the celebrated artist was in the city-state to perform at the upcoming North East India Festival, scheduled for September 20 and 21.

According to the reports, Singapore police rescued Garg from the water and rushed him to Singapore General Hospital. The doctor could not save him despite giving an intensive care and CPR. He was announced dead around 2:30 pm IST. Authorities in Singapore have started investigating the cases of the accident. 

A Legacy That Transcended Borders

Zubeen Garg was one of the most cherished voices in Assam. In addition, he was a versatile figure whose influence extended far beyond the northeast. However, he rose to fame with the Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster, after other chartbusters like Dil Tu Hi Bataa from Krrish 3.

Apart from being the celebrated playback singer, he was a composer, artist, and director. Moreover, his Assamese films such as Kanchanjunga and Mission China were major hits. In addition, Garg recorded songs in over 40 dialects and languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, and Nepali. Plus, he was a multi-instrumentalist who was capable of playing 12 instruments. 

Fans and Artists Pay Tribute to Zubeen Garg

The news of his sudden demise has sent shockwaves across India, especially in Assam and the Northeast, where Garg was deeply loved. Social media has been flooded with heartfelt tributes from fans, colleagues, and fellow artists. Moreover, many are remembering him for representing Northeast India on the global stage. 

Fans have also expressed grief in the UAE, where a large number of the Indian diaspora reside. Moreover, many of them have planned to see him perform live at the Singapore event, which has now become a mourning moment. 

 Personal Life and Background

Zubeen was born in Turn, Meghalaya, into a musically inclined Assamese family. However, he was named after the legendary conductor Zubin Mehta. Moreover, he married to Garima Saikia, a fashion designer, in 2002. 

However, his sister, Jongki Borthakur, also an actress and singer, tragically died in a 2002 car accident. Zubeen Garg left an unmatched musical legacy and millions of fans behind. Hence, his passing is a profound loss for Indian music and culture.
