Life as an expat in Dubai brings unexpected challenges. In the series of expats interviews, we are here with the story of Mita. She is a communication specialist and a long-term Dubai resident. However, she moved to the UAE in 1989, which turned into a transformative journey. It shaped her personal and professional life. Today, she runs a boutique communication agency and shares her experiences through her expat blog.
A Fresh Start for an expat in Dubai
Mita first arrived in Dubai after the separation. She recalls in her blog, “It was an opportunity offered to me, and I thought Why not”. Moreover, she knew only a few people at the time. However, she instantly adapted to the multicultural environment. In addition, she shared that communication was not a big barrier, as English and Hindi were widely spoken.
Still, the first six months were a little challenging. However, her career in communications made meeting new people and building a new circle easier. Moreover, Dubai has become a home for Mita and her family over the years. Now, she lives with her brother, son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. However, she calls her grandson “the love of her life”.
Career and Community Work
Professionally, Mita gross in the dynamic ecosystem of Dubai. She owns a boutique agency that specializes in technology clients and startups. Hence, she has combined her passion for media, social platforms, and storytelling.
On top of that, she also works with her two Nepali friends to house and educate orphans. Hence, this philanthropic side of Mita shows her deep connection with the region and her hope of one day living in Nepal.
Life in the UAE: Opportunities and Challenges
Mita describes Dubai as a melting pot of culture that has broadened her horizon. So, the vibrant mixes of expatriates and Emiratis make socializing enriching. Moreover, social media is also bridging communities further. However, she accepted that there are challenges too for living here.
The cost of living in Dubai is significantly higher compared to India, but she accepts that the salaries are also better. She also shares that the significant drawback is that you can retire in this city. She says, “I think the biggest negativity is that I can never really retire here”.

Mita has been deeply rooted in Dubai for more than three decades. However, she has no plan at per now to return to India. Still, she wants to settle in Nepal, where her humanitarian work could continue. However, she considers Dubai her home now.
