Malayalam cinema continues to make India proud on the international stage. Now, Mammootty’s critically acclaimed film Bramayugam has achieved another historic milestone. It will be screened at the prestigious Oscar Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles as part of the film series Where Forest Meets the Sea.

Moreover, the veteran actor confirmed the news himself on the social media portal to express joy and gratitude for the global recognition of his team. Mammootty wrote on social media, “Excited to share that Bramayugam will be screened as the only Indian film at the Museum’s film series in Los Angeles,” to celebrate the international honor.  Another moment of pride for the entire team!”

The screening is going to take place on the 12th of February 2026. However, it will be the final day of the series that will run from January 10 to February 12. Moreover, this recognition strengthens the position of Bramayugam as one of the most distinctive works in modern Malayalam cinema.

A Blend of Folklore, Mythology, and Psychological Horror

The critically acclaimed film is directed by Rahul Sadasivan and produced by Night Shift Studios in collaboration with YNOT Studios. Moreover, it is a genre-defining Malayalam film that mixes folklore, mythology, and psychological horror.

Plus, the film is set in the 17th century, which follows the story of Kodumon Potti. However, Potti is a menacing and complex landlord portrayed masterfully by Mammootty and his interactions with a lower-caste Panan singer.

The film dives deep into the theme of caste and political oppression to provide the audience with a haunting reflection of social hierarchies in pre-modern Kerala. Plus, its black-and-white cinematography enhances the eerie atmosphere and pays homage to the roots of Indian horror cinema. Therefore, it makes it the first full-length black-and-white Malayalam feature in decades.

Kerala State Film Awards and Global Recognition

The international spotlight of this film came soon after a victorious run at the 55th Kerala State Film Awards. Here, it got the four major honors mentioned below:

  • Best Actor – Mammootty
  • Best Character Actor – Sidharth Bharathan
  • Best Background Music – Christo Xavier
  • Best Makeup – Ronex Xavier

After the announcement, Mammootty also congratulated other winners like Tovino Thomas, Soubin Shahir, and the creative teams behind Manjummel Boys, Premalu, and Bougainvillaea. Hence, it shows his support for the Malayalam film industry.

Besides its award success, the sound design of this film has been recognized throughout the world.  The University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, England, selected its soundscape as a case study for film students. However, it is a rare feat for an Indian regional-language movie.  In addition, the film was ranked second on the Letterboxd list of the best horror films of the previous year. Hence, it highlights the cinematic brilliance of this film.

Mammootty’s Timeless Legacy in Indian Cinema

He continues to redefine the limits of performance and storytelling in Indian cinema at 73. Plus, his portrayal in this film has been hailed as one of the finest of his illustrious career. However, the film also marks the second installment in Rahul Sadasivan’s horror universe after the success of Bhoothakaalam (2022).

Mammootty once again proved that age is no barrier to creativity or global relevance with the most recent recognition in Los Angeles. Moreover, his continued experimentation with roles and genres highlights the growing influence of Malayalam cinema beyond India’s borders.

A Proud Moment for Indian Cinema

The screening of Bramayugam at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is a moment of pride for Indian cinema as a whole and for the fans in India and the UAE. Moreover, the film reinforces the power of authentic narratives and artistic experimentation by bringing the regional storytelling to the global stage.

  1. Due to the dirty politics, the Indian cinema industry would still not recognize him for his unmatched contributions, all because of his strong political stand and xyz identity. I recommend you to watch his unrecognized and officially ignored epic performance in the movie: Peranpu.

  2. This is Karma; he is going places with his class and finesse when Indians failed to recognize him as the best actor more than FIVE times, at least. Congrats to Mamooty and his team. Let them cry, we are always with you and proud of you.
