It is also popular as a suicide prevention vest or suicide-resistant garment. However, it is a specially created piece of clothing used in jails, prisons, and detention centres. Moreover, they are provided to inmates who are considered at high risk of self-harm. Below are the details of this smock:

  • Tear-resistant and difficult to manipulate
  • Made without seams, cords, buttons, or fasteners
  • Designed to prevent choking, cutting, or hanging attempts

The primary goal of this clothing is the safety of the inmate, instead of punishment.

Nick Reiner appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court wearing a blue anti-suicide smock and shackles while standing behind glass. According to court officials and reports, he is currently on suicide watch. It is a precautionary measure taken when an inmate is deemed vulnerable due to mental health concerns, emotional trauma, or past struggles with addiction.

Reiner has publicly battled substance abuse issues for years and reportedly cycled in and out of rehabilitation many times. Moreover, authorities have implemented safety protocols combined with the gravity of the charges, two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents.

It shows a risk assessment conducted by jail medical and mental health professionals being placed on suicide watch does not indicate guilt or a suicide attempt.

According to PSP Corp, anti-suicide smocks are usually made from the same specialised materials used in suicide prevention blankets. Moreover, the unique thickness and construction of the material make it extremely difficult to roll, tear, or fold into a noose, which helps prevent common methods of self-harm in custodial settings.

The smocks are also created to give warmth without restricting movement. So, it allows the person wearing them to sit, walk, or stand comfortably while staying under observation. Unlike standard clothing, they contain no drawstrings, fasteners, or seams that could be manipulated.

PSP Corp notes that suicide cannot always be prevented 100 per cent of the time, but smocks with other preventive measures are intended to provide an extra level of safety. It makes it nearly impossible to use standard methods of self-harm in a place of incarceration.

On the other side, the use of anti-suicide smocks has also attracted scrutiny. According to People, Samuel Haskell IV, the son of a Hollywood producer, appeared in court wearing a similar suicide-prevention vest while facing murder charges. Despite these protections, Haskell later died by suicide while in custody in July 2025. Thus, it highlights the limitations of preventive tools and the complexity of mental health crises within detention facilities.
