Sarvam Maya is a Malayalam horror comedy fantasy that mixes supernatural interest with rooted humour and quiet emotional depth. Moreover, the film is set largely within a sprawling Kerala tharavadu (ancestral home). Additionally, the film employs atmosphere and character-driven storytelling rather than relying on loud scares.  Continue reading the Sarvam Maya Review to learn whether the film meets audience expectations.

Sarvam Maya – Overview

The film features popular actors like Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese. However, popular director Akhil Sathyan has directed it. Moreover, the film banks on their natural comic chemistry and explores deeper themes of faith, identity, and inner conflict. Watch the teaser of this film below:

Sarvam Maya Plot Overview

A young Hindu priest living alone in a vast ancestral mansion filled with silence, rituals, and unspoken memories is at the centre of this film. Moreover, his life runs on strict routines until an unexpected encounter with a ghost disrupts his carefully ordered world.

The encounter starts with mildly comic and curious haunting sequences. However, it slowly turned into a reflective journey that pushed him to question his faith, purpose and the nature of reality.

As the story unfolds, the film moves between the shadowy interiors of the tharavadu and the surrounding paddy fields. Moreover, the supporting characters enter the story to add humour and warmth, but they also highlight the isolation of the priest.

Importantly, the supernatural elements are used less for shock value and more as a storytelling tool to discover emotional and philosophical layers. Therefore, it makes the film gentle rather than frightening.

Direction and Storytelling

The direction of Akhil Sathyan prioritises mood over spectacle. This is because the opening sequences are managed with patience by using silence, shadows and repetition to create an eerie yet oddly comforting atmosphere. In addition, the filmmaker chose control and suggestion instead of relying on conventional horror tropes.

The best part is that the humour in this film emerges organically through character interaction rather than forced punchlines. However, the film experiences a dip in pace during the middle portions, where familiar ideas are revisited without deeper exploration. Despite this, tonal consistency is maintained, which is a crucial achievement for a horror comedy.

Performance

As expected, Nivin Pauly delivers a controlled and understated performance by portraying the vulnerability of a man torn between tradition and doubt. Moreover, his subtle acting adds emotional weight to the film. In contrast, Aju Varghese, as Roopesh Namboothiri, brings his trademark timing and warmth, as he much-needed levity.

Veteran actor Janardhanan also shines as Vallyachan to add nostalgia and emotional grounding. Preity Mukhundhan’s Saadhya adds intrigue, but her character remained underdeveloped in the film. Raghunath Paleri and Althaf Salim also contribute effectively without overshadowing the core narrative as the supporting cast.

Sarvam Maya Review: Verdict

Sarvam Maya is a modest and thoughtful Malayalam horror comedy movie. Moreover, it values atmosphere, character and introspection over loud scares or exaggerated humour. However, it does not fully realise the potential of its premise. Still, strong performances and a consistent tone make it an engaging watch.

If you are living in the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) and looking for a festive Malayalam release that offers light chills, Sarvam Maya stands out as a warm and watchable choice. In short, you can watch it if you want to enjoy a comedy movie with horror elements. However, you should not expect the perfect movie as it does not deliver the perfect.
