No, the World Won’t Go Dark: Truth Behind the Solar Eclipse 2025 Rumors

Recently, the social media platforms have been overwhelmed with posts related to the longest solar eclipse 2025 on 2nd August 2025, i.e, today. Moreover, these posts claimed that the whole world will go dark for more than 6 minutes due to this eclipse. However, the reality is opposite.

Contrary to the online claim, the world will not go black because of a solar eclipse on August 2, 2025. Moreover, NASA has officially revealed that no total solar eclipse will happen on this date. In reality, the next solar eclipse of significant magnitude will happen on August 2, 2027. Moreover, it will be only visible across parts of the Middle East, Africa, and Europe – not worldwide.

Understanding Solar Eclipses

The total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on the part of the Earth. Therefore, it temporarily blocks sunlight in certain regions.

However, these events are generally rare plus exist only for a few minutes. Furthermore, observers can only see it through a narrow path known as the path of totality. Remember, these events don’t cause global blackouts.

Solar Eclipse 2025 to 2027

  • September 21, 2025: A partial solar eclipse is going to happen on this date. A small part of the Sun will be hidden by the Moon. However, this event will not cause darkness and will only be partially visible in certain regions.
  • August 12, 2026: A total solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, and parts of Russia.
  • August 2, 2027: It will be similar to the viral solar eclipse on social media. In addition, the “Eclipse of the Century” will be the name of this event. This total eclipse will exists up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making it one of the longest in modern history. It will be visible from the following locations:
  1. Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Somalia
  2. Europe: Spain, Gibraltar
  3. Middle East: Saudi Arabia, Yemen

Will the 2027 Eclipse Be Visible in the UAE?

Khadija Al Hariri, Operations Manager at Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), shares that the total solar eclipse is set to start at 1:25 PM on August 2nd, 2027, not this month. It will be the longest since 1991 and until 2114.

Don’t Believe the Hype

The rumors related to the global blackout on August 2, 2025, are completely false. NASA has confirmed no such incidents are scheduled for today. Therefore, you should only rely on the official scientific sources.
