Novak Djokovic May Retire After 2026 Australian Open, Says Former Star Rennae Stubbs

Tennis legend Novak Djokovic could soon bring his illustrious career to an end. However, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history. According to former world No. 1 doubles player Rennae Stubbs, the Serbian icon might retire after the 2026 Australian Open. Hence, it could mark the end of an era in global tennis.

The 38-year-old champion has achieved almost everything possible in the sport. He has 24 Grand Slam singles titles. Moreover, he holds the record for the most majors won by any male player. However, his recent struggle with physical fitness and recurring injuries has raised concerns about his ability to maintain performance at the highest level.

Decline After Dominant Years

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic last won a Grand Slam at the  2023 US Open. Since then, his runs have been hindered by injuries, despite reaching the semi-finals in all four tournaments this year. However, he retired hurt against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open after straight-set losses to Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.

Djokovic himself acknowledged the challenge of competing against the new generation. Recently, he accepted that beating the top-ranked stars like Sinner and Alcaraz over five sets is increasingly becoming difficult. He said in a tournament press conference, “If you are not 100 percent physically against them, your entire game suffers.”

Rennae Stubbs Predicts an Emotional Farewell for Novak Djokovic

Stubbs shared her belief with GB News that the 2026 Australian Open could be the final appearance of Djokovic at a major event. She remarked, “I feel like the Australian Open 2026 is going to be his last major tournament to play. It is where his Grand Slam titles started, and it would be a great way to finish his career.

Djokovic has a special connection with Australia. However, he has won a record ten titles in Melbourne. So, ending his career where it began would symbolize a fitting full circle for the tennis legend.

Still Competing for Records

Despite speculation related to his retirement, Novak Djokovic is continuing to pursue excellence to entertain the world. Currently, he is competing for a record fifth  Shanghai Masters title. Recently, he celebrated his win over Marin Čilić and expressed his joy on Instagram: “It’s good to be back”.

If the prediction of Stubbs came true, the 2026 Australian Open could see one of the most emotional farewells in tennis history.
