Hospitals of Dubai have recorded a post-Diwali health surge in Dubai in patients who are looking for urgent care after Diwali celebrations, particularly for respiratory distress, seasonal infections, and diabetic emergencies. However, there are no major burn cases recorded. Still, experts said that the post-Diwali surge to a combination of firecracker smoke, festive overeating, and shifting weather conditions.

Dr Shyam Raja Mohan, Specialist in Internal Medicine at Prime Hospital, Dubai, highlighted a clear surge in patients needing urgent care post-Diwali. Moreover, Dr Mohan said, “This Diwali, many of my regular diabetic patients came in with significantly high blood sugar levels after overindulging in sweets”. He added that uncontrolled diabetes cases are a direct consequence of festive indulgence and need timely monitoring to avoid severe complications.
Rise in Respiratory Cases
Doctors at Aster Hospital in Mankhool saw an increase in seasonal respiratory complaints, especially among children, seniors, and patients with chronic respiratory conditions. However, it is important to note that it is located in an area that is popular for Diwali gatherings.
Dr Jolsana Augustine, Specialist Pulmonologist, said that firecracker smoke and seasonal weather changes often triggered post-Diwali respiratory issues. Dr Mohan said, “Even so-called green crackers release fine metal aerosols that can cause lung irritation, asthma flares, eye and skin irritation, and even subtle burns at a micro level.”
