RTA Upgrades Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha Marine Stations to Enhance Creek Mobility

The RTA has just reopened the enhanced Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha marine transport stations.  Thus, it marks a significant milestone in empowering marine mobility with the Dubai Creek. 

Modern Upgrades with Heritage Preservation

The revamp is a part of the Marine Transport Strategic Plan 2020–2030, which was created to position marine transport as an important mode of mobility in Dubai. Moreover, the new upgrades balance cultural preservation with the modern facilities that are similar to the Bur Dubai and Old Deira Souq stations. Thus, it offers commuters greater comfort and maintains the historic charm of the Creek. 

We have mentioned the key enhancements below: 

  • 50% expansion of shaded waiting areas for passengers
  • New retail and investment spaces to support local businesses
  • Improved lighting systems for safety and visibility
  • Use of eco-friendly and sustainable materials across marine berths

Also, both stations adhere to Dubai’s code for those with disabilities. Therefore, it ensures an accessible facility for all users. 

First-Ever Air-Conditioned Rest Area for Abra Operators

The RTA has introduced an air-conditioned rest area for traditional wooden Abra operators in a first for Abra operations. So, this advancement improves the working conditions and boosts operational efficiency. In addition, it boosts the overall standards for public service. 

Optimised Development for Efficiency via Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha Marine Stations 

The RTA has achieved cost reduction and better financial returns by developing both stations at the same time. Furthermore, the plan provided safe navigation and continuous trips. In addition, it boosts a smooth passenger experience during the construction. 

Rising Popularity of Marine Transport in Dubai

Marine transport is seeing the strong demand because 9.7 million riders were recorded in the first half of this year, i.e, 2025. Now, the upgraded stations are expected to further boost ridership. In addition, it is contributing to the broader sustainability and urban development of the emirate. 

Expert Insight on this new development

RTA officials shared the insights on the project. So, they highlighted that the development showcases the vision of the Emirate to promote sustainable mobility solutions. Moreover, the official said that the project will preserve the cultural and heritage identity along the iconic Dubai Creek.  In addition, it offers residents and visitors a more comfortable, sustainable, and culturally rich travel experience.
