Sharjah Road Closure Announced for Etihad Rail Phase Two: Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced a new Sharjah road closure as part of Phase Two of the Etihad Rail project. Notably, it is a significant development aimed at connecting all the emirates. Moreover, the project could extend to neighbouring Gulf countries.

According to the SRTA, roads that connect the Maliha Street and the Sharjah Ring Road, near University Bridge, are going to be closed on Friday, August 15, 2025. Moreover, this road closure is important to boost the ongoing construction work for the landmark rail network.

The authority posted the update on its official social media channel. Therefore, motorists are requested to use alternative routes and strictly follow the traffic safety guidelines to avoid delays and ensure smooth movement during the closure.

Part of a Wider Road Closure Plan

This is not the first traffic disruption caused by the Etihad Rail works in Sharjah. Earlier this month, authorities temporarily closed the University Road and the Distributor Road towards Sharjah at Al Badi Bridge to allow construction activities to proceed.

The SRTA has been actively coordinating with the contractors and other government entities to reduce the impact on daily commuters. In addition, it is ensuring the timely completion of the rail project.

Etihad Rail: Transforming UAE’s Transport Future

The Etihad Rail network is one of the largest and most ambitious projects in the UAE. After coming into operation, it is going to transform travel across the country through an extensive passenger and freight railway system.

As of now, two stations are already confirmed in Sharjah. Therefore, it highlights the key role of Emirates as a central transit hub connecting the northern emirates with the rest of the UAE. Notably, the project is scheduled to be operational in 2026. However, officials have not yet announced the exact launch date.

The service expects to serve around 36.5 million passengers yearly by 2030. Thus, it could ease road congestion and reduce travel time. Moreover, it could offer a sustainable option to long-term commuting.

Motorist Advisory

Authorities are reminding motorists to plan their routes in advance. In addition, it would be best to stay tuned with the SRTA’s official channels and be patient as the temporary disruptions pave the way for a more efficient and interconnected transport network soon. Lastly, it would be best to visit the SRTA website or follow their social media platforms.
