Two high-speed trains collided after a derailment on a major rail corridor.

On Sunday evening, around 7:45 pm local time, a high-speed Iryo train travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed on a straight stretch of track near Adamuz in Córdoba province. The rear carriages crossed onto the adjacent line, colliding with a Renfe train heading from Madrid to Huelva.

Key details of the speed train crash:

  • The Iryo train carried around 300 passengers
  • The Renfe train had nearly 200 passengers
  • The impact caused multiple carriages to derail, with some falling down a 4-metre embankment
  • The crash site was remote, accessible only by a single-track road. Hence, it has complicated rescue efforts.

Dozens were killed and many critically injured in one of Spain’s worst rail accidents since 2013.

The latest confirmed figures show at least 39 people killed, including the Renfe train driver. More than 122 are injured, with 12 adults and 1 child in intensive care.  Victims were mainly in the front carriages of the southbound Renfe train.

Emergency teams recovered bodies scattered hundreds of metres from the tracks, highlighting the violence of the impact. DNA samples are being collected to help identify victims.

Investigators say the crash is “highly unusual” and not linked to speed. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente confirmed:

  • Both trains were travelling below speed limits
  • The track had been renovated in May 2025
  • Human error is not currently suspected

Investigators are focusing on a possible technical failure, a suspected faulty rail joint, and infrastructure or rolling-stock issues. A full technical report is expected to take several weeks.

Impact on Rail Services Across Spain and Europe

Major travel disruption with services suspended on key routes:

  • All Madrid–Andalusia high-speed services remain suspended
  • Routes to Seville, Málaga, Córdoba and Huelva affected
  • Knock-on disruption reported across France, Italy, Germany and the UK
  • Over 200 trains have been cancelled since the crash

Passengers have been advised to expect continued delays in the coming days.

Spain’s Rail Safety Record Under Scrutiny

Spain has the largest high-speed rail network in Europe, spanning more than 4,000km of track. More than 25 million high-speed passengers in 2024. The Spain train crash is the deadliest since 2013, when a derailment in Galicia killed 80 people.

Conclusion

As Spain mourns the victims, this tragic speed train crash has sparked urgent questions about infrastructure safety, even on the world’s most advanced rail networks. Investigators now face mounting pressure to explain how such a disaster occurred on a modern, recently renovated line.
