The global aviation industry is witnessing stricter regulations on personal electronic devices (PEDs) after multiple fire incidents caused by overheating lithium-ion batteries. Hence, the UAE airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Flydubai, have taken stricter rules against these batteries. However, they are commonly found in gadgets such as power banks, Bluetooth earphones, and laptops. Hence, it poses significant fire hazards during flights.
Recent Fire Incidents Spark Safety Reforms
These tightened rules come after 2 alarming incidents in recent months. Below are the details about those incidents:
- Around 150 passengers were evacuated from a Qantas business lounge at Melbourne International Airport after a power bank caught fire in a traveller’s pocket, causing severe burns.
- Air China flight made an emergency landing after a lithium battery in cabin baggage ignited inside an overhead compartment in another case. Hence, it causes panic among passengers.
These back-to-back events have pushed aviation authorities throughout the world to revisit the handling and transport of rechargeable devices on aircraft.
Emirates Bans Power Bank Usage Onboard

Recently, Emirates Airlines officially banned the use of power banks on board flights from the 1st of October as a part of enhanced safety measures. However, passengers are still allowed to carry them in their hand luggage. Yet, charging or using power banks during the flight is strictly prohibited.
This move aligns with the international aviation safety standards. Hence, it ensures that all lithium-powered devices remain switched off throughout the journey to prevent overheating or accidental activation.
UAE Airlines’ Updated Device Restrictions
Here is the summary of what is allowed and what is not allowed on the UAE airlines:
| Device Type | Emirates | Etihad | Flydubai |

UAE Airlines Rules for electronic devices Travellers Should Know

- Power banks and e-cigarettes: They are allowed in cabin baggage only, but they cannot be used or charged on the aircraft.
- Apple MacBook Pro: Certain recalled models are not allowed in checked baggage on Etihad flights and must remain powered off if carried on board.
- Mobile phones: Dubai Airport allows a maximum of 15 mobile phones per passenger (excluding personal devices).
- Hairstyling tools: Only one gas-powered curler is permitted with the safety cover attached. Gas refills are not allowed in any baggage.
- Drones: They must be completely switched off, with removable batteries not exceeding 160Wh. Only two spare batteries (individually protected) may be carried in cabin baggage.
Expert Insight: Why These Restrictions Matter
According to global aviation safety experts, lithium-ion battery fires are one of the fastest-growing onboard risks. However, a single spark or overheating battery could fill the cabin with smoke within seconds. Hence, it could force the pilots to take emergency measures.
By enforcing strict carriage policies, the UAE airlines aim to reduce fire risk and boost passenger safety, especially as travel volumes rise during peak seasons.
Check Airline Websites Before You Pack
Each airline maintains specific rules for electronic devices. Therefore, passengers are strictly advised to verify policies on their official website of the airline before travelling. Indeed, these devices have made flying more connected. However, these new restrictions remind travellers that safety comes first.
