UAE Cybersecurity Council Warns Against Unofficial Apps Amid Rising Digital Threats

The UAE Cybersecurity Council has issued an important warning because cyber threats are continuously growing in the world. In addition, the advisory has urged residents to avoid downloading the unofficial apps from unverified sources. Moreover, it highlights the growing risks of surveillance, data theft, and unauthorized access to sensitive personal information.

Unofficial Apps Pose Serious Cyber Risks

According to the council,  unverified apps are the door for malware, spyware, and phishing attacks. Moreover, these attacks often request excessive permissions, like access to photos, conversations, and location data. Therefore, it could affect the privacy of users. However, you can be safe from such cyber attacks by following the tips mentioned below:

  • Download apps only from trusted platforms such as Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  • Review app permissions before installation.
  • Routinely restrict access to the camera, microphone, and location unless essential.

Your Digital Footprint Could Make You a Target

Surprisingly,  around 1.4 billion accounts are being hacked each month in the world. Moreover, simple online activities can expose you to identity theft, financial fraud, and other cyber threats.. Therefore, the council highlights that digital footprints, like browsing behaviors and social media activity, are often exploited by cybercriminals. So, it would be best to protect the following factors:

  • Regularly update privacy settings.
  • Disable unnecessary background access.
  • Reject default permissions that aren’t needed.

Beware of Clickbait and Misleading Content

The council has also cautioned against engaging with the suspicious links or clickbait-style headlines, like Breaking News – Click here. Moreover, they are often crafted to spread malware or phishing links. 

Now, some fraudulent content is being generated using AI to appear credible while spreading misinformation. Therefore,  online shoppers are advised to performed steps mentioned below to stay safe:

  • Shop only on HTTPS-secured websites.
  • Check for a padlock symbol in the browser.
  • Verify the authenticity of online sellers before making purchases.

‘Cyber Pulse’ Campaign to Boost Awareness

Currently, more than 200000 cyberattacks are happening per day in the UAE. Therefore,  the government has continued its national awareness campaign “Cyber Pulse”. Now, it is in its second year of running. 

The Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) also supports the campaign. Furthermore, it is focused on building a resilient and cyber-aware society.  Additionally, it supports people to take charge of their cybersecurity. 

Furthermore, the initiative is providing people with a comprehensive training program through community outreach and a virtual academy.
