UAE Cybersecurity Council Warns of Rising Risks from Public Wi-Fi

The UAE Cybersecurity Council has issued a strong warning about the increasing risk of using unsecured Public WiFi networks after a sharp surge in nationwide cyberattacks. According to the official numbers, the authority has reported more than 12000 breaches since the beginning of this year, which accounts for nearly 35 percent of all cyber incidents in the nation.

These findings highlight how hackers are increasingly targeting open networks in cafes, airports, and shopping malls to steal passwords, banking details, and other sensitive information.

Growing Threat of “Man-in-the-Middle” Attacks

The council revealed that users of public WiFi are especially vulnerable to “man-in-the-middle” (MITM) attacks. So, cybercriminals intercept the online communication, redirect users to fake websites, record phone calls, or secretly install malware. However, these threats always go unnoticed until significant damage is done.

Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, UAE Cybersecurity Council Head, highlighted the importance of empowering cyber safety in line with the national digital strategy of the country. He said, “We are working tirelessly to develop a safe digital space that protects users from increasing cyber risks and empowers trust in our digital ecosystem”.

How to Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi

The Cybersecurity Council has revealed three essential safety measures when using a public network to help residents and visitors protect themselves from cyberthreats. So, you can find those helpful tips below:

  • Use a VPN: A reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts internet connections, preventing hackers from stealing private data.
  • Enable Safe Browsing: Activate browser security settings to block suspicious websites and phishing attempts.
  • Avoid Sensitive Transactions: Avoid accessing banking, email, or confidential accounts while on public networks.

The council stressed that VPNs are more than privacy tools because it is an essential safeguard to protect the digital identity. Apart from that,  awareness is the first line of defence because many users still underestimate the risks linked to free WiFi in public spaces.

UAE’s Push for a Secure Digital Future

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is strengthening its cybersecurity infrastructure because of the rapid growth of digital transportation and smart services. Therefore, the authority is urging citizens and expats to remain alert, adopt safe online methods, and report suspicious activities.

The country is pushing forward with its vision of a trusted digital economy throughout the globe. So, cybersecurity experts warn that public Wi-Fi remains a prime target for cybercriminals unless users take proactive precautions.
