The UAE Media Council has launched a mandatory “Advertiser Permit” for people who are promoting services or products on social media. Moreover, the permit is compulsory for financial gain or non-monetary compensation. In addition, this regulation supports the strategy of the UAE to boost a safe, clear, and investor-friendly media environment.
What is the Advertiser Permit?
It is a license needed by people who perform advertising activities on the social media platform. Moreover, it applies to residents and visitors living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In addition, the license is developed to professionalize the advertising ecosystem. Furthermore, it aims to protect all parties involved, like content creators, advertisers, and the audience.
Key Conditions for Social Media Advertising
Securing these permits is not the only thing that advertisers must do for advertising on social media. In addition, permit holders are required to follow some rules mentioned below:
- Ads must be clearly labeled and not misleading.
- Content must not harm public interest or violate any laws.
- Prior approval is needed for certain categories, depending on local legislation.
- Advertisers must register for UAE tax and display their permit number on social accounts.
Who Needs the Permit?
- Individuals earn from promoting products/services on social media.
- Visiting influencers working with UAE-accredited talent or ad agencies.
Instead of these people, those who are promoting their services or products are exempted from the requirement of securing this permit. In addition, individuals under the age of 18 do not need this permit for producing educational, cultural, or awareness content.
Validity and cost for the advertiser permit
This permit is valid for 1 year and is renewable for the UAE resident, with free registration for the first three years. In addition, it is valid for 3 months with an extension option for visitors and tourists. Remember, applicants for this permit must be 18+ and have good conduct. If the applicant is a UAE resident, they must also obtain the electronic media license.
Objectives of the Regulation
- Protect community and content creator rights.
- Combat misinformation and fraudulent content.
- Enhance the UAE’s standing as a global hub for high-quality digital content.
- Attract creative talent and investors into the advertising industry.
Additional Regulations and Content Restrictions
The Council strictly prohibits content that violates public morals, national security, or contradicts UAE values. In addition, all ad content must include product and company names. Moreover, promotions should not involve misleading contests or compulsory purchases.
