The  United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to experience continued rainfall, strong winds, and a noticeable drop in temperatures until Friday, December 19, as an active UAE weather system continues to impact a large part of the nation. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), people should stay cautious as unsettled weather conditions persist across the coastal, northern, eastern, and inland regions.

Ongoing Rainfall Across Multiple Regions

Rains of varying intensity have been recorded since Saturday night, December 15. Moreover, the affected regions include offshore islands, northern and eastern regions, and parts of Abu Dhabi. Fujairah’s Murabba area received the highest rainfall so far among recorded locations. Hence, it measures 33.1 millimetres to highlight the strength of the system.

Meteorologists monitoring weather radar imagery confirmed the passage of a second wave of rainfall on Tuesday, especially affecting islands and the eastern and northern parts of the UAE. Moreover, intermittent rain activity is expected to continue through Wednesday to keep skies cloudy in many areas.

Peak Impact Expected Between Thursday and Friday

The NCM has identified Thursday and Friday as the most significant phase of the current weather system. The UAE rainfall forecast is set to begin in the western regions before slowly moving eastward. Moreover, Abu Dhabi is expected to see rain late on Thursday night, which will continue into the early hours of Friday morning.

Rainfall is expected to extend further to northern regions, Al Ain, and the eastern parts of the country. Moreover, cloud cover is expected to stay extensive during this period to contribute to cooler daytime temperatures.

Falling Temperatures and Strong Winds

Temperatures across the UAE are expected to drop noticeably as cloud cover slowly decreases Friday evening and overnight. However, the lowest temperature recorded on Wednesday was 9.7 °C in Jais Mountain, Ras Al Khaimah, at 3:45 UAE local time. Hence, it indicates cooler-than-usual winter conditions in the mountainous region.

Beside the rain, fresh southeasterly winds are also causing blowing dust and sand, especially over the coastal and internal areas.  According to the NCM, horizontal visibility has been reduced by less than 2,000 metres in some regions, especially northward and eastward, from 6:00 to 16:30 on Wednesday, December 17.

Rough Sea Conditions and Reduced Visibility

Sea conditions are expected to be rough in the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea, which could make the conditions difficult for marine activities. Moreover, strong winds are also linked to convective cloud formations. As a result, it might raise sand or dust to lead to reduced visibility on highways and roads.

Safety Advisory for UAE Residents

The National Centre of Meteorology has also requested residents to follow the safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities and to exercise extra caution during adverse weather conditions. Moreover, drivers are advised to drive safely during the period of low visibility. The NCM has also released the following tips to stay safe in sandstorms:

  • Drive safely and follow the rules
  • Be sure to lock all windows to prevent dust from entering inside.
  • Do not expose yourself to dust directly
  • Stay tuned to official updates

Beach lovers and fishermen should also avoid venturing into the rough sea conditions. Moreover, authorities have confirmed that the situation is being continuously monitored and further updates will be released as weather conditions evolve.

What to Expect Next from the UAE Weather?

You can expect fluctuating weather with rain, wind, and temperature drops over the coming days as the UAE weather is transitioning into the cooler winter days. Staying informed through official weather updates and planning travel accordingly will be important until conditions stabilise after 19 December.
