War 2 Review: Hrithik Roshan & Jr NTR’s Spy Thriller Packs Action but Misses Full Potential

The wait is finally over for action fans because ‘War 2’, the latest installment in the YRF spy universe, has hit the theatre today.  Directed by Ayan Mukherjee, this high-octane sequel unites Telugu Superstar Jr NTR and heartthrob Hrithik Roshan for the first time. However, it also has Kiara Advani with her glitz and glamour. Despite the stealing cast, the question is whether the film delivers on its promise.

War 2 Review: Storyline & Performances

Hrithik Roshan is back as Kabir. However, he is now a former RAW agent who has turned into a freelance assassin. Moreover, he is working to break a global terror group named Kali from the inside.  Jr NTR steps in as Vikram Chalapathi, a fearless RAW operative. Now, he is determined to stop Kabir from apparent betrayal. On the other hand, Kiara Advani is playing Commander Kavya Luthra, whose past connection with Kabir adds emotional depth.

The first half of the movie delivers the stylish action, which includes adrenaline-pumping train chases and slick hand-to-hand combat. It will surely keep you hooked in the first half. On the other hand, the screen presence, sharp dialogue delivery, and fight sequence of Hrithik Roshan are also magnetic.  Similarly, the Bollywood debut of Jr. NTR is impressive due to his rugged charm and intense persona, holding its own against the charm of Hrithik.

Highs & Lows

✅ What Works:

  • Powerhouse casting of Hrithik & Jr NTR
  • Engaging first-half action sequences
  • Strong interval twist
  • Grey-shaded character arcs adding intrigue

❌ What Doesn’t:

  • Second-half pacing issues
  • Flat narration in crucial moments
  • Limited emotional depth
  • Songs that fail to make a lasting impact

Ayan Mukerji has created a visually appealing spy thriller. However, the second half lacks punch, which prevents the movie from reaching its full potential. Moreover, the emotional experience, especially in the climax, came too late to boost the overall experience.

Technical Merits

The soundtracks of Pritam are serviceable but easily forgettable. Still, Sanchit and Ankit Balhara’s background score effectively amplifies the tension. Cinematography by Benjamin Jasper ACS captures slick action beats. However, the VFX, despite improvement from Pathaan and Tiger 3, still falls short of top-tier standards.

Twitter Buzz & Audience Reactions

A user shares his excitement after watching the film because he likes every element in the movie.

Film critic “Tarun Adarsh” finds the movie disappointing.

A Twitter user shares that he liked the movie, especially the Janabeali song

Final verdict

It is a better movie than the recent Spy Universe outings due to Hrithik and Jr NTR’s star power and first-half action. Still, inconsistent pacing and messed-up emotional depth have stopped it from being a genre-defining spy thriller. You should definitely watch it for the star chemistry and big-screen action spectacle.
