WhatsApp Update Brings Big Group Chat Changes With Member Tags, Text Stickers and Event Reminders

Whatsapp Update: Whatsapp has introduced a fresh set of updates aimed at making group chats simpler, more organised, and easier to follow for millions of users worldwide, including those in the UAE. According to WhatsApp’s official blog, the Meta-owned messaging platform is rolling out three new group-focused features designed to improve clarity and communication in busy chats.

What Has Changed?

As we mentioned above, the latest Whatsapp update has introduced three key features, all focused on improving the group chat experience. Below is the list of those key updates:

  1.  Member Tags in Group Chats
  • You can now add custom tags to their names within individual groups
  • Tags can describe a person’s role or identity in that specific group

Examples include:

  • “Anna’s Dad” in a family group
  • “Treasurer” in a community or residents’ association
  • “Goalkeeper” in a football group

Whatsapp member tag is customisable per group. It means that you can have different identities across multiple chats. This feature is especially useful in large groups where members may not have each other’s phone numbers saved.

According to WhatsApp, “We all wear different hats and sometimes you want to give that more context in a group chat.”

  1.  Text Stickers
  • You can turn any word or phrase into a sticker by typing it into Sticker Search.
  • These text stickers help important messages stand out in fast-moving chats.
  • Newly created stickers can be saved directly into sticker packs, without sending them first.

Whatsapp text stickers feature is designed to reduce message repetition and ensure announcements are noticed.

  1.  Event Reminders in Groups
  • Group members can now create events within chats
  • Custom early reminders can be set for all participants

Ideal for:

  • Family gatherings
  • Online meetings
  • Community events
  • Group calls

WhatsApp says this update of Whatsapp event reminders aims to reduce confusion and last-minute cancellations by keeping everyone informed.

Whatsapp has noted that these changes show how users increasingly depend on group chats for daily coordination. Moreover, it noted that the platform is no longer used only among friends and family but now supports larger communities, such as parents’ groups, sports teams, fantasy leagues, and professional networks.

As mentioned in the official announcement of Whatsapp, the goal is to make group conversations more organised and comfortable to use.

Who will benefit?

These Whatsapp updates will impact a wide range of users in the UAE. Below is the list of people who will get the most benefits:

  • Expats managing family and community groups
  • Tourists coordinating travel plans with groups
  • Residents using WhatsApp for school parent groups, building associations, sports and hobby communities
  • Professionals who rely on WhatsApp for informal work coordination

Member tags are expected to be particularly helpful where multiple users share similar names or come from different cultural backgrounds because of the highly diverse population of the  United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Security Concerns Amid Updates

Whatsapp always introduces user-friendly updates. However, the company is also facing increased scrutiny over security practices. According to the report of The Independent, security researchers uncovered a critical vulnerability that exposed phone numbers of over 3 billion WhatsApp users globally in late November.

The platform has not linked these updates to it. Still, the discovery has renewed conversations around data privacy and platform safety.

What’s Next?

Users in the UAE can expect these features to appear gradually in upcoming app updates. WhatsApp typically tests new tools region by region before making them widely available. In addition, we can expect the following changes in the upcoming days:

  • Continue improving group management tools
  • Enhance community-based features
  • Address security and privacy concerns more proactively

The latest Whatsapp update signals a continued push toward making group conversations smoother, smarter, and more personalised.
