Al Estiqlal Square Sharjah: Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Inaugurates Redeveloped Landmark

Sharjah has revealed one of its most significant urban developments as His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially inaugurated the revamped Al Estiqlal Square Sharjah on Tuesday. Moreover, the ceremony is a big milestone for the emirate. Hence, it aligns with the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations and honouring the nation’s historic independence on December 2, 1971.

This detailed redevelopment enhances the urban identity of Sharjah and reinforces its cultural and national pride. So, this makes Al Estiqlal Square, Sharjah, a renewed landmark for residents, visitors, and tourists.

A New National Monument for Sharjah

During the ceremony, Dr Sheikh Sultan introduced the plaque of the 34-metre-high Independence Monument positioned at the heart of Al Estiqlal Square. Moreover, the monument stands as a defining structure topped with a seven-pointed star. Hence, it symbolises the unity of the seven emirates.

The striking monument features 4 engraved plaques. Each of them will feature the following key moments in the historical timeline of the country:

  • December 2, 1971 — Formation of the UAE and independence from Britain.
  • January 8, 1820 — Beginning of 151 years of British influence following the treaty signing.
  • July 22, 1932 — Establishment of the Sharjah Civil Air Station and later the abolition of the British military base in 1971.
  • Details on the British military base constructed contrary to earlier agreements.

These elements together transform the square into an educational and patriotic space. Hence, they reflect the deep historical roots of Sharjah.

Modern Urban Redesign with Enhanced Visitor Spaces

  • Dynamic fountains flanking the monument
  • Expanded green landscapes and pedestrian pathways
  • A fully reimagined lighting system, enhancing visibility, ambience, and evening aesthetics

These elements collectively boost the square into a modern, accessible, and visually appealing public space suitable for families, community gatherings, and visitors.

Unified Architectural Identity for Central Sharjah

The transformation of the buildings surrounding Al Estiqlal Square is one of the most remarkable aspects of the redevelopment. Moreover, Dr Sheikh Sultan was briefed on upgrades made to 24 buildings. However, it now displays enhanced façades and architectural detailing consistent with Sharjah’s visual heritage. Below are the details about further improvements:

  • Replacement and unification of 95 commercial signboards
  • Installation of modern lighting to highlight the buildings’ structural features at night
  • A cohesive urban design that aligns with Sharjah’s cultural identity

This step strengthens the architectural integrity of the city and improves the overall visitor experience.
