UAE to Witness Rare Blood Moon on September 7: Longest Total Lunar Eclipse in Years

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing for one of the biggest astronomical events of the year – a total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Therefore, sky watchers across the country will get a chance to see a rare Blood Moon that will last for 1 hour and 22 minutes. Thus, it makes it one of the longest total eclipses in recent years.

According to the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), residents will be able to enjoy nearly five and a half hours of eclipse phases, which include the penumbral stage to the dramatic red glow during totality. Surprisingly, about 87 percent of the population will be able to watch this event. Thus, it is being called one of the most photogenic of the decade.

What is a Blood Moon?

During a total lunar eclipse, Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, which will cast a shadow across the Moon. So, it turns a striking red or copper shade because the Moon enters the umbra of Earth.

Notably, it happens because the Earth’s atmosphere filters the sunlight and scatters the blue wavelength. However, it allows the red and orange tones to reach the moon. Khadijah Al Hariri, Operations Manager at DAG, said, “This creates the beautiful Blood Moon phenomenon, where the Moon glows in fiery shades visible to the naked eye.”

Blood Moon Eclipse Timings in the UAE

  • 7:28 pm – Penumbral eclipse begins
  • 8:27 pm – Partial eclipse begins
  • 9:30 pm – Total eclipse begins
  • 10:12 pm – Maximum eclipse (Totality)
  • 10:53 pm – Total eclipse ends
  • 11:56 pm – Partial eclipse ends
  • 12:55 am – Penumbral eclipse ends

How to Watch Safely

Unlike a solar eclipse, a blood moon eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye. Indeed, you have read it right! You can view this red moon without any protective glasses. However, you could use telescopes or binoculars for a clearer experience.

Moreover, photography lovers can capture this event using long-exposure shots. In addition, they can attach smartphones to telescope eyepieces. Moreover, DAG suggests choosing dark and open areas away from city lights for the best view. However,  it would be best to check the weather conditions in advance.

Public Viewing & Livestream

The Dubai Astronomy Group will arrange a large community viewing of the event. However, the DAG will release more details soon on their official portal. In addition, there will be a global livestream with real-time footage. Plus, you can see a breathtaking shot of the Blood Moon over the Burj Khalifa, in collaboration with renowned astrophotographer Rami Dibo.

Remember, you should not miss this event because these events occur in years. Next, the total lunar eclipse visible from the UAE is set for December 31, 2028, coinciding with New Year’s Eve celebrations.
