Abu Dhabi Implements New Child Safety Regulations in Private Schools

Parents across Abu Dhabi have been notified about the big change to how students can arrive at and leave private schools after the new safety regulations from the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). Moreover, the measure aims to boost child safety and transportation safety. So, it applies to all private schools in the emirate.

Mandatory Adult Supervision for Students Under 15

Children across 15 are no longer allowed to travel to or from school without an accompanying adult. Thus, these rules cover walking alone, taking taxis, using ride-shares, private cars, or boarding non-school buses. Hence, schools have stressed that they will not release students unless an authorized adult or parents make their adjustment.

ADEK highlighted that there will be no exceptions, even for those living close to schools who previously walked independently. However, independent travel is still allowed for old students in grades 9 to 12.

Strengthened School Security and Handover Rules

Schools must follow the formal handover process to ensure smooth enforcement.  Thus, parents are required to give a written notice if someone outside the approved lists collects their child. However, staff must verify IDs and record all communication.

Moreover, the ADEK has mandated round-the-clock security at school gates. In addition, guards must log visitors’ details and maintain clear protocol for managing potential ‘security intrusion’.

Defined Responsibility Windows for New Child Safety Regulations

The ADEK confirmed that the supervision of the school extends only to 45 minutes before classes start and 90 minutes after they end. In addition, students dropped off outside these times is the responsibility of the parents. However, parents are required to sign a waiver acknowledging risks for older students using bicycles, scooters, or non-school transport.

Legal Accountability for Non-Compliance

It is important for the schools across the emirate to follow these regulations. However, if any school fails to follow them, it must face legal or administrative penalties under the law of the UAE, as per the warning issued by the Abu Dhabi Education Authority.

The ADEK aims to create a safer environment for students by enforcing these rules. In addition, the authority reassures that the health, safety, and well-being of the students are one of the top priorities of the education system of Abu Dhabi.  Therefore, schools and parents should get ready to support this initiative to enhance the safety of their students or children.
