NYU Abu Dhabi Scientists Develop AI Model to Predict Solar Winds with Greater Accuracy

Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have invented an impressive artificial intelligence (AI) model that can predict solar wind speeds up to four hours in advance. Thus, it could deliver greater accuracy than the current forecasting methods.  Moreover, the study was published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. So, it marks a significant achievement in space science and technological safety.

The Postdoctoral Associate Dattaraj Dhuri and Shravan Hanasoge, Co-Principal Investigator, lead the research team. However, they train the AI model using high-resolution ultraviolet (UV) images from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory along with decades of historical solar wind data.

Conventional AI language models could process text. However, this innovative system analyses images of the Sun to detect patterns linked to the solar wind variation.  Moreover, this breakthrough approach has resulted in a 45 percent improvement in forecast accuracy compared to the current operational models and a 20 percent improvement over earlier AI-based methods.

Dhuri said, “This is a significant step towards securing the satellites, navigation system, and support infrastructure that modern life depends on. By combining advanced AI and solar observations, we could give early warning that helps protect critical technology on Earth and in space.”

Why This and Solar Wind Matter for the UAE and Beyond?

Solar winds has the ability to disrupt communication networks, satellites, aviation systems, and even national power grids. Therefore, accurate forecasting is important to decrease risks to modern infrastructure. Moreover, this breakthrough empowers its role to contribute to global space science for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as it is becoming the emerging leader in space exploration and research.

NYU Abu Dhabi will continuously make its mark as a hub for scientific innovation. However, it has created more than 9200 recognized publications. Moreover, it operates over 90 faculty labs throughout the world.

With this development, the UAE is empowering its position as the regional leader in cutting-edge AI research, astrophysics, and space technology. In addition, it supports the international campaigns to save the important systems of the Earth.

Key Takeaways: The AI models of the NYU Abu Dhabi offer earlier and more valuable warnings of solar wind changes. Hence, it could help the world protect technology, satellites, and infrastructures throughout the world. However, it is important to learn that these winds could destroy satellites, infrastructures, and technology. Still, this development could aid scientists in protecting all of them.
