Chris Williamson Faces Backlash Over Dubai Tour After Past Criticism

Former Love Island star turned podcaster Chris Williamson is facing criticism after announcing Dubai in his Self Discovery World Tour 2026 after describing the city as soulless and “one of the most awful places on the planet.”

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), led the criticism. Initially, he responded through an open letter and later on a blog post to Williamson. Moreover, he questioned the integrity of Williamson for selecting to perform in the city he once dismissed.

Criticism of Past Remarks

Williamson made the controversial statement about Dubai in the episode of his Modern Wisdom podcast. However, he called the city the swallow and accused it of being developed on “slavery labour”.

Bin Sulayem argued that such comments were a “gross disservice” to a city home to millions of expats. He noted that Dubai welcomed nearly 9.9 million visitors in the first half of 2025. So, it highlights its continued global appeal.

Invitation to Experience Dubai Firsthand for Chris Williamson

Despite his strong criticism, Bin Sulayem extended an invitation to Williamson. Moreover, he offered him a chance to experience Dubai through the eyes of residents. In addition, he also collaborated with the radio host and Dubai Bling Star Kris Fade to highlight that the vibrancy of the city cannot be reduced to soundbites.

Bin Sulayem wrote, “Extraordinary claims need proof . If Chris visits, engages, and still feels Dubai is awful, we can agree to disagree. But his remark does not show the reality lived by millions, whether clickbait or ignorance.”

Addressing Misconceptions

Bin Sulayem also used the opportunity to address common stereotypes. Moreover, he noted the labor reform and wage protection system of Dubai to reject outdated claims about exploitation. In addition, he compares the safety record system of Dubai with major Western cities by highlighting rising crime in London, Paris, and the US. On the other hand, Dubai is one of the safest destinations in the world.

Looking Ahead

The controversy highlights the tension between the public statement and commercial decision, as Dubai is gearing up to host Chris Williamson. However, the issue is more than only criticism.

Actually, it is about the fair representation of a city that grows on diversity and city. The decision about whether Williamson accepts the invitation to revisit Dubai before his tour might determine how this audience responds to his event.
